A black and red marble clock in the shape of an Egyptian temple attributed to G. Servant, flanked by double columns inscribed with hieroglyphs and ornated with a winged uraeus, all made in two patina bronze. The clock is surmounted by a patinated bronze sphinx. Resting on four bronze faces wearing the nemes and terminating in lion paw feet.
Georges Emile Henri Servant (circa 1828-1890) who took over his father in 1855 at their foundry, rue Vieille-du-Temple, in Paris, specialized in the production of neo-Egyptian style clocks, very popular in France since 1860s, and also the making of Greek style decorative objects. He drew considerable attention to the high quality of his bronzes at the 1855 Paris Universal Exhibition and then at the 1862 London Exhibition. At this time Servant exported up to 40% of his production, principally to the United States, where for instance, his sphinx clocks were sold with great success by Louis Tiffany Inc. or Hamann & Roche of New York (A similar clock is now exposed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York). But his success came really at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition, where he was awarded a gold medal for his neo-Greek and Egyptian works (Les Merveilles...

A Fine
Most Impressive French Gilt, Patinated Bronze and White Marble Mantel Clock by Lepaute of Paris, France. Of impressive scale and refined Neoclassical design, the circular white enamel dial signed Lepaute à Paris within a gilt-bronze bezel surmounted by a finely cast and chased gilt bronze eagle with outspread wings perched on a laurel wreath. The clock flanked by two seated classical figures in dark patinated bronze, each reading from an open book, symbolising Knowledge and Wisdom. The central plinth panel finely cast with cherubs in relief, set upon a rectangular white marble base mounted with ormolu friezes of scrolling foliage and masks, raised on toupie feet.
The Lepaute family were among the most renowned horologists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, supplying timepieces to the French royal court and many important clients of the Empire period. The fine casting and crisp chasing of this example, combined with its balanced architectural design, exemplify the high quality of Parisian clockmaking of the period.

Incredible investment quality antique French gilded bronze Empire eight day clock, "Allegory of Poetry" Claude François Rabiat circa 1810, in excellent condition.
The clock depicts a handsome tall winged angel holding a stylus and leaning on a column with two volumes on philosophy. The column with four portrait plaques including "Caesar" and the writer/philosopher "Xenophon", there are two further portrait plaques to the side of the column, the clock is raised on a malachite marble plinth with gilt bronze bun feet.
The clock having an eight day time and strike mechanism, striking the hours on a mellow sounding bell, the white potrcelain dial with black Roman numerals and signed "a' Paris".
The clock works perfectly and has recently been professionally overhauled and cleaned by a clocksmith, the clock keeps very good time, the original key and pendulum is present.
