The dial of the clock signed ‘JULIEN LEROY A PARIS’, the barometer dial signed ‘PASSEMANT AU LOUVRE’.
The eight day strike Wall Clock and its matching Barometer, both have a terminal in the form of a pineapple drop with acanthus leaf scroll detail. Above this is a Sèvres panel of a cherub in a garden, rising to a white enamelled dial with Arabic and Roman numerals flanked by cascading relief moulded fruit from a further Sèvres panel of a cherub in flight below a ribbon tied pediment.
This companion clock and barometer are fine nineteenth century examples of a pair originally supplied to Madame du Barry in 1769 by the marchand mercier Simon-Philippe Poirier. They were then described as ‘Un Baromètre & Thermomètre, de Passement, montés très richement en bronze dorés d’or moulu et ornés de trois plaques de porcelaine de france à Enfants en miniature cy 10561I.’ It is interesting to note that the original design was made to allow either of three porcelain plaques, depicting putti with astrolabes. Eighteenth century models are now in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Mechanism in perfect working order.
Fireplace garnish composed of a clock and two five-light candelabras, all three pieces made by combining gilt bronze, with relief elements and round bulges and cold-chiseled details, and porcelain decorated with low-temperature enamels, including gold enamel. The porcelain pieces follow models from the Sèvres National Manufacture of the 18th century, with large pictorial cartouches on a cobalt blue background adorned with golden plant motifs. The set follows a historicist design that combines baroque and neoclassical elements with enamelled scenes of Rococo inspiration, representing landscapes and scenes with mythological themes alluding to the arts and the goddess Venus. The clockwork is stamped “Chles. MT”, with serial number 17420. The main glazed porcelain plates are signed DP Boncher. The clock follows an architectural structure, with an oval base with a prominent front in plan, raised on four molded feet in the shape of a top, on which a large ornamental vase is placed. This plinth has a distinct pinto and, above it, a main body as a façade, with a circular pediment that houses the clock face. This includes black enamelled Roman numerals on white medallions with a gold border, arranged around the central representation of a putti reclining among clouds, holding a floral garland and accompanied by musical instruments. Among the medallions that house the numbers, a small jeweled decoration that evokes pearls and embedded rubies, which is echoed in the secondary areas of the body of the piece and also the vase, always combined with delicate golden filigrees.
On both sides of the sphere are two female portraits of ladies from the 18th century, in oval frames. Below, a classically inspired scene with a muse holding musical instruments, probably Euterpe or Erató, accompanied by a putti reading a sheet of music. On the sides of the clock body, two large curved rectangular plates house highly pictorial enameled landscapes, worked with the same miniaturist precision as the rest of the enameled cartouches. These are landscapes of romantic heritage, again inspired by the 18th century, with ideal settings for a twilight atmosphere, featuring classical ruins. The vase that tops the body of the clock has a hemispherical tank, shoulders ending in an edge, an openwork truncated conical neck, which opens smoothly towards the shoulders, and a domed lid, also openwork. The handles are figurative, in bronze, with two female sisters crowned with flowers, of clear Greco-Latin inspiration, worked in a round shape. In the tank, the vase houses two enameled porcelain cartouches, the front one with two putti and a dove - a symbolic allusion to Venus - and the back one with musical instruments. The design of the clock is completed by two thick bronze S-shaped plant braces, under the vase, and counter moldings and plant motifs cast in relief and cold chiseled, combining matte and polished finishes. The candelabras follow a similar design, with large vases of neoclassical design on pedestals, in this case cylindrical, raised on four low feet of turned design. The bases house porcelain cartouches with scenes of putti related to the arts; In one of them we see two putti practicing painting, and in the other two others in a scene related to classical lyric poetry, with one putto writing while the other, holding a lyre, raises a laurel wreath above his head. 'ER', the mark of French clockmaker Ernest Royer, active in the later 19th Century, is stamped on the underside of the ormolu mounts. This Japanese style clock set was crafted in France in circa 1880. The set consists of a central clock, which is accompanied by two vases.
The central clock features a gilt brass rectangular body with a pitched top, like a pavilion roof. The roof is mounted with wavy, silvered brass forms, and topped by a silvered brass ball finial, with a pointed end, which is bracketed by wavy forms.
Mounted onto the four corners of the clock’s front facade are silvered dragons and cloud-like motifs. The central panel is recessed, and contains the gilt brass circular clock dial, inscribed with Roman Numerals. The centre of the clock dial is decorated with embossed flowers and a circular, red form, with a painting of a bird at its centre. The dial is signed with the retailer’s name, ‘ALEX'R M HAYS, NEW YORK’. The space below the dial is ornamented with relief flowers, a black porcelain triangle, which is overlaid with floral designs, and a dark blue porcelain fan, decorated with buildings. They are accompanied by the porcelain figure of a Japanese woman, wearing a kimono and seated at a koto.
Similar recessed panels, featuring porcelain birds and coloured geometric forms, decorate the sides of the clock body. These are mounted with wavy, silvered brass shapes, which serve as handles. The clock body is set on a rectangular, silvered brass base, which is raised up on four bracket feet, and features a cloud-like silvered brass apron.
The vases that accompany the clock have tall, soft-edged rectangular bodies, and are decorated in a similar style to the central clock. They likewise feature silvered brass finials, handles and bases, and gilt brass bodies, which are decorated with embossed flowers, geometric painted porcelain shapes, and Japanese figures. Unlike the clock, however, the vases feature full-length portraits of standing Japanese figures. One vase depicts a woman, who wears a kimono and raised wooden shoes (geta), and who holds a parasol and fan. On the other vase, the image shows a man dressed in a haroi jacket, with a kosode and trousers underneath, and sandals on his feet. He holds a knife and circular, metal shield, and carries a katana sword...

This wonderful clock set, which is comprised of a mantel clock and pair of flanking vases, is designed in a fanciful French ‘Oriental’ style. The set is crafted from brass which has been silvered, parcel gilt and painted. The clock is also mounted with porcelain plaques which are beautifully painted with colourful depictions of birds and flowers.
The mantel clock is composed of a tall rectangular body with a break arch top which is crowned by a covered twin-handled urn. The urn features a parcel gilt pointed finial on its cover and a silvered body painted with pink cherry blossoms. The urn stands on the arched top of the clock, which is decorated with a sculptural gilt scrollwork band and a gilt foliate border. The arch contains a circular porcelain dial which features a central painting of a pair of birds, encircled by black Roman Numerals within white cartouches. This dial is framed by a gilt beaded bezel. The shoulders of the clock body are mounted with parcel gilt and silvered elephant heads holding ring handles.
Porcelain panels decorate the front and sides of the silvered clock body. These panels are beautifully decorated with paintings of colourful birds, butterflies and cherry blossom trees, set within gilt stiff-leaf frames. The clock body is set on a silvered rectangular base which is edged with a parcel gilt foliate band. The front of the base is mounted with a silvered and parcel gilt lion's head mask and flanking painted porcelain plaques. The clock stands on four parcel gilt silvered feet, which are geometric and scrolled in form.
