Wall Clock and Matching Barometer with Sèvres Plaques
Located in Brighton, West Sussex
A very fine gilt-bronze wall clock and matching barometer with Sèvres Plaques.
The dial of the clock signed ‘JULIEN LEROY A PARIS’, the barometer dial signed ‘PASSEMANT AU LOUVRE’.
The eight day strike Wall Clock and its matching Barometer, both have a terminal in the form of a pineapple drop with acanthus leaf scroll detail. Above this is a Sèvres panel of a cherub in a garden, rising to a white enamelled dial with Arabic and Roman numerals flanked by cascading relief moulded fruit from a further Sèvres panel of a cherub in flight below a ribbon tied pediment.
This companion clock and barometer are fine nineteenth century examples of a pair originally supplied to Madame du Barry in 1769 by the marchand mercier Simon-Philippe Poirier. They were then described as ‘Un Baromètre & Thermomètre, de Passement, montés très richement en bronze dorés d’or moulu et ornés de trois plaques de porcelaine de france à Enfants en miniature cy 10561I.’ It is interesting to note that the original design was made to allow either of three porcelain plaques, depicting putti with astrolabes. Eighteenth century models are now in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
French, Circa 1880.

Pair of French 18th Century Louis XV Period Cartel Clock and Barometer
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
A most impressive and large scale pair of French 18th century Louis XV period cartel clock and barometer signed Le Roy & Cie, Paris. Each ormolu case has a exquisite a symmetrical design with scrolled foliate movements amidst richly chased branches and flowers. At the center are the original enameled dials one being the clock and the other being the barometer. Each dial is surrounded by an ormolu lattice design while above are period scenes of a gentleman courting a maiden. The young man stands above the young maiden playing a flute while she sits below reading the sheet music. Two sheep seem to be enjoying themselves listening to the music being played.
Julien Le Roy (1686-1759) was a major 18th-century Parisian clockmaker and watchmaker. Born in Tours in 1686, by the age of 13, he had already made his first clock. In 1699, he moved to Paris further training. He became maitre horloger in 1713 and later juré of his guild. Further appointments followed, including the Directorship of the Société des Arts, but the pinnacle of his achievement was being appointed clockmaker (Horloger Ordinaire du Roi) toking Louis XV in 1739. He carried on his business from Rue du Harlay until his death in 1759. His son Pierre Le Roy...

An Extremely Fine and Rare 19th Century Ormolu Cartel Clock
By Samuel Marti
Located in Amersham, GB
An exquisite Louis XV style gilt and patinated bronze cartel clock. The eight-day two train bell striking movement, with vertically planted platform cylinder escapement and stamped with S. Marti et Cie MEDAILLE D'ARGENT. 1889 roundel and serial number 647 to backplate.
The dial formed as a deep blue and gold flecked enamel dome applied with gilt Roman numerals and stars set within billowing clouds interspersed with sunburst rays. Applied with three patinated bronze cherubs in flight, around the dial attending to a floral garland.
Amongst the clouds can be found a pair of doves, a horn and arrows, a quiver and bow. This coupled with the cherubs and flower garland would suggest this clock was made as a love token or wedding present. The symbolism of love, marriage and fertility, the cherubs representing the three Greek Erotes...

Streamline Moderne Machined Aluminum Thermos No 539 by Henry Dreyfuss
Located in San Diego, CA
Henry Dreyfuss (American, 1904–1972) Machined Aluminum Thermos No 539 and tray. USA, 1940 Stamped manufacturer's mark to underside of thermos: [The American Thermos Bottle Co., The Only Thermos Vacuum Bottle Designed By Henry Dreyfuss, Norwich Conn, USA].
Henry Dreyfuss was the most understated of the early industrial designers. Like his teacher and main inspiration Norman Bel Geddes, he moved from theater design to industrial design, but took a more practical approach, developing long relationships with clients such as the Hoover company, John Deere, and the New York Central Railroad. Dreyfuss preferred the word "cleanlining" to "streamlining," which distanced him from what he considered to be the excesses of the 1930s restyling movement. He was sufficiently self-promotional to write his own autobiography, Designing for People, in 1955, following in the footsteps of Bel Geddes, Teague, and Loewy.
These pitchers are typical of his approach to industrial design, with synthetic materials and clean lines. The American Thermos Bottle Company promoted them with Dreyfuss's name, which appears in signature form on the bottom. This insulated aluminum thermos pitcher exemplifies the signature design approach of renowned industrial designer Henry Dreyfuss. Featuring distinctive horizontal banding and a streamlined handle inspired by the profile of the Mercury locomotive, the thermos merges modern aesthetics with everyday functionality—hallmarks of Dreyfuss’s utilitarian design philosophy.
These vintage thermos pitchers...
