The Galeries Lafayette department store on Boulevard Haussmann in Paris was inaugurated in October 1912. Soon, it became the second most visited monument in Paris, after the Eiffel Tower.
In 1922, the Galeries Lafayette department store opened the "La Maîtrise" applied art studios run by the decorator Maurice Dufrêne, who became its artistic director. The vocation of these workshops is to produce "works" (furniture, fabrics, rugs, wallpapers, ceramics, etc.) within the reach of all (well almost). The decorators and twin brothers Jean and Jacques Adnet, are among the first collaborators.
An ironwork section is created under the name of Ferronnerie d'Art Des Galeries. Talented ironworkers participate, such as Marcel Vasseur, who created the ironwork of La Maîtrise Pavilion at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts...

A rare architectural gem from the golden era of Dutch design. This adjustable wrought iron table or piano lamp, dating from the early 1920s, is an exceptional example of the Amsterdamse School movement, famed for its expressive forms, honest materials, and integration of function and sculpture.
Crafted entirely by hand, the lamp features a sophisticated three-position height adjustment system via a striking counterweight mechanism, a feat of engineering as elegant as it is utilitarian. The heavy forged iron frame displays bold geometric detailing and honest craftsmanship typical of the movement, with meticulous hammer marks and subtle asymmetry that celebrate the hand of the maker.
While unsigned, the design language speaks clearly to the school of Piet Kramer and the greater network of Amsterdamse School designers, whose influence extended into municipal buildings, interiors, and custom furnishings throughout the Netherlands in the 1910s and '20s. This is not just lighting, this is architecture in miniature.
The not original hide-like-fabric of the lamp shade is no longer in perfect condition, but it certainly still is good enough to use on this desk lamp. A fantastic and rather unusual wrought-iron wine storage rack styled as a domed chest, it features wide shaped straps welded to curved and squared bar with curled iron elements throughout. The front of the chest retains an early lock and key, opening and dropping down on hanging chains to give access to the 28 bottles of wine that can be stored inside. It retains a wonderful early surface with chaotic oxidization and the effects of rust throughout the overall green and blue-ish patina. Circa the late 19th to early 20th century.
