Hand Carved Indian Temple Carving Statue from Gujarat Depicting Mother and Child
Located in Yonkers, NY
An Indian early 20th century hand carved architectural temple carving from Gujarat, depicting a mother and her child with nicely weathered patina. Crafted in the Western portion of India, in the culturally rich state of Gujarat, this early 20th-century hand-carved temple sculpture captures the tender bond between a mother and her child. The mother, adorned with a delicate headdress and detailed clothing and jewelry, stands in a dignified, frontal position. Her small child, clinging affectionately to her flank and grasping her dress, turns his head back towards us, a big smile illuminating his face. This heartwarming scene is beautifully rendered with a keen attention to detail, showcasing the artisan's skill and devotion. The sculpture's nicely weathered patina, along with traces of polychrome, lends it an air of antiquity and authenticity. The piece's unfinished back hints at its original architectural context, meant to be viewed from the front as it adorned a sacred space. Ideal for a variety of settings, this temple carving will enliven any wall, bringing a touch of historical and cultural depth to your home. Its charming depiction of maternal love, combined with its rich textures and colors, makes it a captivating focal point. Anglo-Indian Vizagapatam Bombay Mughal Style Footed Box With Bone Overlay
Located in Moreno Valley, CA
Nice and unusual Indian Mughal style large decorative box, filigree and carved horn. Anglo-Indian footed domed box with exceptional engraved details throughout with filigree and carved veneered bone plaques with arabesque carving. Vizagapatam, late 19th century. History of the Anglo-Indian Boxes Beginning in the early part of the 18th century, Indian artisans made what came to be known as Anglo-Indian boxes for the English residents living in India, who eventually brought or sent them back to England. At the beginning of the 19th century, India began exporting these boxes commercially, although not in any significant numbers until the 1850s. People valued them so highly that manufacturers of tins copied the designs on them in the late 19th and early 20th century. Anglo-Indian boxes fall into four groups: Rosewood or ebony boxes inlaid; sandalwood boxes veneered; sandalwood boxes covered with Sadeli mosaic; and carved boxes often combined with Sadeli mosaic/ The first two categories came from Vizagapatam in East India while the last two came from Bombay in West India. English traders discovered the rich woods and intricate workmanship of Indian artisans, so colonial government officials began to recognize the work of the Indian artists and craftsmen as a source for satisfying the need for furniture and boxes, which would both serve to enhance English households in India. This gave rise to the cabinetmaking workshops in Vizagapatam between Calcutta and Madras. Craftsmen made the first boxes to be decorated with Sadeli mosaic of rosewood or ebony, incised to give further definition to the decoration, directly inlaid into the wood. The shape of the early boxes was either sloping at the front with a flatter section at the back, reminiscent of English writing slopes, or rectangular. Artisans inlaid the borders with stylized floral scrolls and the centers with a single floral motif following a circular or oval symmetrical or asymmetrical pattern. The edging was ornamental and protective, both helped protect the end grain against the weather. Made in Vizagapatam, situated on the south east coast of India, near Madras These exotic boxes...

Antique Indian Gujarat Hand Carved Temple Carving Statue Depicting a Woman
Located in Yonkers, NY
An antique Indian early 20th century hand carved architectural temple carving from Gujarat, depicting a smiling woman. Originating from Gujarat, India, this antique early 20th-century hand-carved architectural temple carving is a captivating depiction of a smiling woman. This exquisite sculpture captures the essence of traditional Indian artistry, with the woman carved in a frontal position while her legs are delicately portrayed in profile. Her serene expression, enhanced by a slight tilt of her head, radiates a sense of calm and contentment. The intricate details of her headdress, attire, and jewelry highlight the craftsmanship and cultural richness of the region. The woman's features are beautifully rendered, showcasing a blend of grace and elegance. The carving, with its weathered appearance, speaks to its historical significance and journey through time. The back of the sculpture remains unfinished, adding an authentic touch to its architectural origins, as it was likely meant to be a part of a larger structure or placed against a wall. This temple carving serves as a striking decorative piece, perfect for adding an exotic and cultural element to any interior space. Whether displayed in a living room, hallway, or study, it brings a sense of history and artistry to the environment.
