Humorous engraving typical of Flemish representations of the 18th century, representing two seated drinkers . We can see a woman with a glass in her left hand and a carafe in her right, while a man who probably drunk sleeps on the table. Beautiful achievement typical of the Flemish school of the 17th century. Gerard ter Borch - or Terburg - also known as "the young man" was born in 1617 in Zwolle near Amsterdam and died in 1681 in Deventer. He worked as a genre painter and portraitist and was very active especially in Münster and Amsterdam. He discovered his talent for drawing at the age of eight and became a pupil of his father Gerard ter Borch, known as "the old man". The Dutch painter Hendrick Avercamp supported Terburg. He studied with Pieter de Molyn (Dutch painter, draughtsman, engraver and publisher) for three years (1632-1635). He travelled extensively between London, Germany, France and Italy. Starting with strict but pompous forms, Baroque furniture developed into playful pieces of furniture with numerous curves and magnificent fittings by the middle of the 18th century. Baroque chests of drawers mostly date from the period between 1720 and 1750 and feature multiple curved fronts and veneer marquetry. Baroque tables and chairs feature lavishly curved legs, the lower ends of which end in volutes or animal hooves. Towards the end of the Baroque period and the Rococo period, the curved legs of tables and chairs merge into the frames in a single sweep. Baroque cabinets are usually disproportionately large by today's living standards, as they originally stood in castles. Heights of 2.40 to 2.60 meters are not uncommon for baroque cabinets. Pocket snuff flask carved from coquille nut. Amazing small pocket snuff bottle, carved from a large coquille nut. This antique piece was created in the shape of a spinning top with two secret compartments which can be unscrewed to open. Made in the continental Europe and most probably French or Portuguese provenance from the 18th century, circa 1780. Extensively decorated with organic and floral motifs with a beautiful image of a nut on the upper part. Curiously due to the shape of this piece, it could be played as a spinning tool on a table. This adds a particular interest for the multiple use with which the carving was conceived. Weight: 42.60 Grams. Measurements: Diameter of 40 mm and a height of 89 mm (1.57 x 3.5 Inches). Hallmarks: No marks, gorgeous deep antique patina. Coquille Nut The coquille nut emanates from swampy areas on the eastern side of South America, from a palm known as the “attalea funiefera”. Brazilians call it “Piassabe”. The nuts were introduced into Western Europe in the mid-16th century, and used for small carved objects until the end of the 19th century.
