Bronze Bust Sculpture Att. Will Rogers on Green Stone Base by Leonard McMurry
Located in Oklahoma City, OK
A large striking bronze bust sculpture of a man with the likeness of Will Rogers. This piece was created by Leonard McMurry, also known as Oklahoma’s “Michelangelo”. It stands on a green marbled stone square base.
The sculpture depicts a man, with an extreme likeness to Will Rogers. The man has combed hair, which is parted to one side. The sculpted bronze bust has a fabulous patina, and the square green stone it is affixed to is marbled with fantastic greens, blacks, and creams.
About the Artist:
Leonard McMurry, (1913–2008) - McMurry is best known for his bronzes, which are primarily figurative, in many venues, from Oklahoma City to St. Louis to New York City. In 1941 his work received Honorable Mention in the Prix de Rome competition. In 1952 his work was included in the National Sculpture Society show in New York. Among his works in Oklahoma are The 89er, at the Oklahoma City Civic Center, The Legend of the Great Westerner (informally called "Buffalo Bill") at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, and Healing Hands, at the City of Faith Hospital/Oral Roberts University in Tulsa. (which at the time was the largest casting in the world.) For the 1982 Diamond Jubilee of Oklahoma statehood, McMurry completed a series of twenty-one busts of Oklahoma's governors. He also created fourteen busts for the National Hall of Fame for American Indians in Anadarko. Leonard McMurry died in 2008.
Born to a family of prominent cotton farmers in the Texas panhandle, McMurry moved to Oklahoma in 1955 and studied under the sculptor's Carl Mose and Ivan Mestrovic...

European Carved Limestone Celtic Votive Head of a Male Warrior
Located in London, GB
A Large European Carved Limestone Celtic Votive Head of a Male Warrior Wearing a Typical Flowing Moustache Small Beard and Curling Locks of Hair Stiffened with Lime Wash the Slit Mouth Open as if in Command
Circa 1st Century BC - 1st Century AD
Size: 31cm high, 22cm wide, 25cm deep - 12¼ ins high, 8¾ ins wide, 9¾ ins deep / 42cm high - 16½ ins high (with base)
From about 500 BC, first Greek and later Roman historians mention peoples living in a large area of non-mediterranean Europe as Celts. These classical chroniclers seem to have recognised these communities as having sufficient shared cultural traditions to justify their being given a common name, ‘Keltoi’ by the Greeks, and ‘Celtae’ or ‘Galli’ by the Romans. The earliest allusions to Celts by such Greek historians as Herodotus (485 - 425 BC) were followed by Polybius (200 - 118 BC) and Livy (59 BC - AD 17) who discuss the expansion of the Celts from their central European homelands during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC. They document the presence of Celts in Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Asia Minor, specifically central Turkey. They testify to the successful Roman resistance to the Celts in Italy, after the ignominy of the sacking of Rome by them in 387 BC, and describe the huge defeat suffered by the Celts at the battle of Telemon in northern Italy in 225 BC. The Celts in Greece who sacked the sacred site of Delphi in 279 BC were defeated by King Antigonos Gonatas of Macedon in 278 - 277 BC and in Turkey by Altalus of Pergamon in 240 BC. The Celts in Spain fell under the shadow of Rome from 2nd Century BC and the Celtic heartland known by the Romans as ‘Gaul’ was conquered by the Romans under Julius Caesar in the mid 1st Century BC. Britain was not referred to as Celtic by the ancient historians, but Caesar recognised the close similarities between Britain and Gaul especially in their political organisation. Tacitus (55 - 120 AD) and others chronicled the conquest of Britain between 43 and 84 AD some mentioning the fierce nature of the Celts who went into battle naked.
Celtic art therefore belongs to an artistic tradition in the early history of Europe which is no less important than that of the classical world. Art was central to Celtic identity and was closely related to the objects which it decorated. The Celts were used to seeing art as an integral part of their everyday lives.

Flying Mercury in green marble copied from the famous work of Giambologna
Located in Prato, IT
Green serpentine marble sculpture
Late 19th century
Height approx. 88 cm.
The flying mercury and the bronzes
While he was still busy working on the fountain in piazza Maggiore, the papal delegate Cesi asked Giambologna for a statue to be placed in the courtyard of the Archiginnasio, seat of the ancient and prestigious Bolognese university; he should have painted a bronze depicting the god Mercury with his index finger stretched towards the sky, a symbol of the divine origin of knowledge, which would have served as a warning to all students.
The project was never completed, but Giambologna elaborated a model preserved at the Civic Museum of Bologna, which is only the first of the numerous bronzes with the same subject made by the artist, defined precisely as flying Mercury. In later versions, the sculptor transformed Mercury into a much more dynamic figure reaching upwards, as if ready to take flight, giving it an unprecedented freedom of movement and lightness. When he returned to Florence, the sculptor certainly proposed it to the Medici, who enthusiastically immediately ordered one to be sent to Emperor Maximilian II of Habsburg, as a diplomatic gift for the ongoing negotiations of the wedding between Francesco and Giovanna, sister of the sovereign.
Giambologna replied with the two bronzes preserved in Vienna and Dresden and in 1580 cast the large Mercury now exhibited in the Bargello, originally intended for the loggia of the villa of Cardinal Ferdinando dei Medici to crown a fountain placed in the center of a magnificent decorative complex; the only variant with respect to the previous examples is constituted by the head of Zephyr placed under the foot of the god and from which a breath of wind blows it upwards, accentuating the sense of immateriality. In addition to the successful invention of the flying Mercury, Giambologna acquired immense fame by making numerous other bronzes for the Florentine collectors of the time; his first patron, Bernardo Vecchietti must certainly have owned many, given to him in part by the sculptor in exchange for his protection, but around the 1880s it can be said that there was no collector who did not aspire to own a work by Giambologna, especially those of small format.
The development of this trend in Florence is largely due to the artistic passions of the Grand Duke Francesco I, who with the creation of environments such as the Studiolo in Palazzo Vecchio and the Tribuna degli Uffizi, provided new criteria for the exhibition of the works, pushing all collectors to imitate his extraordinary collection. In the Studiolo, in addition to the painted tables that decorated the doors of the cupboards filled with all kinds of things, there were 8 niches containing bronze figures of divinities; Giambologna painted the one depicting Apollo (1573-75), with the characteristic serpentine pose and beautifully finished.
The placement of the statuette in the niche was no longer an impediment to the plurality of views as Giambologna endowed it with a sort of mechanism that allowed it to rotate. For the Tribune he instead created the six Labors of Hercules (1576-1589), small silver sculptures...
