A delightful pair of patinated bronze statuettes, originally candelabra, after Clodion (Claude Michel Clodion 1738 – 1814), depicting a young satyr and satyress. Mounted on truncated columns of fluted white marble, and marked with the Clodion signature (of questionable authenticity) these figurines now show no trace of the original candelabra screw fixtures. Italian 19th Century Life Size Marble Group "Hebe and Eagle" by Aristide Fontana
By Aristide Fontana 1
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine Italian 19th century Carrara marble life-size marble sculpture of "Hebe and The Eagle"; depicting a young maiden seated on a rocky outcrop holding an urn over her shoulder and serving water from a bowl to a thirsty eagle, raised on a circular base by Aristide Fontana (Italian 19th Century - Active 1870-1890), Carrara, Inscribed to the reverse; "Aristide Fontana Sc./Carrara", circa 1870-1880. Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth, was the daughter of Zeus and Hera and was the hand-maiden and cup bearer of the gods and the symbol of youthful beauty and chastity. She is often depicted as a temptress tantalizing the eagle of Jupiter with a cup of ambrosia and her body. In her role as cup-bearer she offered nectar and ambrosia and here she holds the cup before the eagle, Zeus' messenger. This sculpture subject matter resembles Bertel Thorwaldsen's, marble sculpture of Ganymede and the Eagle, circa 1817 and currently at the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, VA. The most notable difference between both sculptures is that, unlike in Thorwaldsen's work, this sculpture depicts a figure of a young semi-nude maiden bearing a pearl necklace centered with a charm engraved with the letter "S". This sculpture subject matter can also be attributed to Psyche, perched on a Stygian rock and threatened by dragons, is rescued from her task by Jupiter's eagle, who brings her a lekythos filled with the river's water. Although Apuleius' story of Cupid and Psyche had been a common theme in European art since the Renaissance, the particular incident of Psyche rescued by Jupiter's eagle was seldom illustrated. Comparable to themes in mythology, Old Testament figures and heroines in particular were popular subjects of artworks in the mid-19th century. Several scenes from the Biblical (Gen. 24) story of Rebecca's meeting with Eliezer, and subsequent marriage to Isaac, were depicted in the 19th century. The most frequent representation shows Rebecca at the well with a pitcher. Other examples of the subject include those by the Italians Cesare Lapini, Giovanni Battista Lombardi and Domenico Menconi and American sculptors Brown, Mozier, and Chauncey Bradley Ives...

Flying Mercury in green marble copied from the famous work of Giambologna
Located in Prato, IT
Green serpentine marble sculpture Late 19th century Height approx. 88 cm. The flying mercury and the bronzes While he was still busy working on the fountain in piazza Maggiore, the papal delegate Cesi asked Giambologna for a statue to be placed in the courtyard of the Archiginnasio, seat of the ancient and prestigious Bolognese university; he should have painted a bronze depicting the god Mercury with his index finger stretched towards the sky, a symbol of the divine origin of knowledge, which would have served as a warning to all students. The project was never completed, but Giambologna elaborated a model preserved at the Civic Museum of Bologna, which is only the first of the numerous bronzes with the same subject made by the artist, defined precisely as flying Mercury. In later versions, the sculptor transformed Mercury into a much more dynamic figure reaching upwards, as if ready to take flight, giving it an unprecedented freedom of movement and lightness. When he returned to Florence, the sculptor certainly proposed it to the Medici, who enthusiastically immediately ordered one to be sent to Emperor Maximilian II of Habsburg, as a diplomatic gift for the ongoing negotiations of the wedding between Francesco and Giovanna, sister of the sovereign. Giambologna replied with the two bronzes preserved in Vienna and Dresden and in 1580 cast the large Mercury now exhibited in the Bargello, originally intended for the loggia of the villa of Cardinal Ferdinando dei Medici to crown a fountain placed in the center of a magnificent decorative complex; the only variant with respect to the previous examples is constituted by the head of Zephyr placed under the foot of the god and from which a breath of wind blows it upwards, accentuating the sense of immateriality. In addition to the successful invention of the flying Mercury, Giambologna acquired immense fame by making numerous other bronzes for the Florentine collectors of the time; his first patron, Bernardo Vecchietti must certainly have owned many, given to him in part by the sculptor in exchange for his protection, but around the 1880s it can be said that there was no collector who did not aspire to own a work by Giambologna, especially those of small format. The development of this trend in Florence is largely due to the artistic passions of the Grand Duke Francesco I, who with the creation of environments such as the Studiolo in Palazzo Vecchio and the Tribuna degli Uffizi, provided new criteria for the exhibition of the works, pushing all collectors to imitate his extraordinary collection. In the Studiolo, in addition to the painted tables that decorated the doors of the cupboards filled with all kinds of things, there were 8 niches containing bronze figures of divinities; Giambologna painted the one depicting Apollo (1573-75), with the characteristic serpentine pose and beautifully finished. The placement of the statuette in the niche was no longer an impediment to the plurality of views as Giambologna endowed it with a sort of mechanism that allowed it to rotate. For the Tribune he instead created the six Labors of Hercules (1576-1589), small silver sculptures...

Young woman with jug, Carrara marble, signed Bonnal, early 20th century
Located in NICE, FR
Charming sculpture of a young woman carrying a jug, signed by Bonnal on the back and inspired by “Rebecca at the Well” by 19th-century Italian School artist Guglielmo Pugi. The sculpture in fine white Carrara marble, created between the end of the 19ᵉ century and the beginning of the 20ᵉ century, depicts a pensive, lascivious young woman dressed in the fashion of the turn of the century: she wears a turban from which escapes curls of hair and a bracelet characteristic of the period; the cut of her dress is also very elaborate for a simple peasant woman. The finely embroidered motifs on the dress and turban are further evidence of the sculptor's mastery. A delicate, feminine piece that will look great in a hallway or on a dressing table, and will make a lovely gift for an aesthete woman. Guglielmo Pugi lived in Florence, where he ran a sculpture workshop with his two sons. Their workshop, “Guglielmo Pugi e Figli”, was mainly dedicated to exports, particularly to the United States. Guglielmo Pugi's work, emblematic of the Art Nouveau style, is characterized by direct carving in alabaster and Carrara marble (often white or veined). Some of his sculptures are now housed in Volterra's Historical Alabaster Museum. Many of his works were shown at major international exhibitions, such as the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo and the 1904 Exposition...
