A unique patinated bronze sculpture in the form of a 1940's leather bomber jacket hanging on a wall mounted coat rack. The 1940's bomber jacket. It is one of the few items that has really transcended both fashion and trends. People are wearing these jackets today in the same way they have for the last six decades. It's a symbol of freedom, of the rebel in us, or a certain kind of social stigma, a certain attitude.
Hanson chooses to isolate and immortalize a man's leather jacket. The choice becomes a comment on the power in our culture of image per se. A comment on the ascendance of personal style and image, via our possessions and fashion, to a consuming culture value. Seemingly casually tossed over a hook, yet frozen there in bronze, the jacket evokes an entire range of masculine stereotypes celebrated by the media-cowboys, mavericks and rebels of our time. The open road, macho bravado, rugged individuality, sex appeal. Yet the presence of this lone jacket equally evokes the very personal, if anonymous, history of its wearer. Like the cast-form-life sculpture of George Segal, it expresses mystery, even poignancy, of its owners absence. As in much of Hanson's art, this culture manages both to critique and also to value such material icons of our culture.

A masterwork of American glass artistry, this signed Steuben crystal sculpture, “Trout & Fly,” was designed by James Houston and first introduced in 1966. Houston, one of Steuben’s most celebrated designers, was widely known for his wildlife studies in glass, many inspired by his time in the Canadian Arctic and his reverence for the natural world.
The sculpture depicts a trout captured in a moment of suspended motion, arcing upward from stylized swirling water in pursuit of an exquisitely detailed 18k gold mayfly. The insect, mounted on a fine wire stem, hovers delicately at the fish’s open mouth, completing the narrative of predator and prey.
Techniques & Materials
Steuben Crystal: Hand-blown, optically pure crystal, polished to a flawless surface. Steuben’s proprietary formula, developed in the early 20th century, is distinguished by its extraordinary clarity and brilliance.
Controlled Bubble Inclusions: The fish’s body is decorated with perfectly placed air bubbles, achieved through expert manipulation of molten glass. These bubbles evoke the shimmer of scales and the sparkle of water.
Cold-Polished Detailing: Fin edges, mouth, and wave-like base are sharply defined through precise polishing, heightening the sense of motion.
18k Gold Mayfly: The hand-wrought gold insect is finely chased to suggest delicate wings and naturalistic form, providing a striking contrast to the crystal’s transparency.
Designer: James Houston (1921–2005)
Houston joined Steuben in 1952 and became one of its leading designers, bringing a lyrical naturalism to the company’s repertoire. His works—including Arctic wildlife, fish, and avian studies—are considered icons of mid-20th-century American glass design. The “Trout & Fly” exemplifies Houston’s hallmark blend of simplicity, symbolism, and technical virtuosity.
Introduced in 1966 (Steuben design no. 1002-ST). This example bears the engraved Steuben signature at the base.
The composition celebrates the vitality of nature and the drama of survival. The eagle motif in décor and Folk Art has been widely used throughout our nation's history, most notably as part of our Great Seal. The founders of the United States were fond of comparing their new republic with the Roman Republic, in which eagle imagery, usually the golden eagle, was prominent. On June 20, 1782, the Continental Congress adopted the design for the Great Seal of the United States depicting a bald eagle grasping 13 arrows and an olive branch with its talons.
When Charles Thomson put together the final design for the Great Seal, he placed a bundle of arrows in the eagle's left (sinister) talon. The official description specifies the bald eagle holding "in his sinister a bundle of thirteen arrows." The thirteen arrows are tightly aligned – a symbol of "strength in unity" that's found in the traditional cultures everywhere, from the Romans to the Iroquois— in this case a nod to the unity of the original 13 colonies.
