Neoclassical Figurative Sculptures

NEOCLASSICAL STYLE

Neoclassical design emerged in Europe in the 1750s, as the Age of Enlightenment reached full flower. Neoclassical furniture took its cues from the styles of ancient Rome and Athens: symmetrical, ordered, dignified forms with such details as tapered and fluted chair and table legs, backrest finials and scrolled arms.

Over a period of some 20 years, first in France and later in Britain, neoclassical design — also known as Louis XVI, or Louis Seize — would supersede the lithe and curvaceous Rococo or Louis XV style.

The first half of the 18th century had seen a rebirth of interest in classical antiquity. The "Grand Tour" of Europe, codified as a part of the proper education of a patrician gentleman, included an extended visit to Rome. Some ventured further, to sketch the ruins of ancient Greece. These drawings and others — particularly those derived from the surprising and rich archaeological discoveries in the 1730s and ’40s at the sites of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — caused great excitement among intellectuals and aesthetes alike.

Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. The overall appearance of neoclassical chairs, tables and cabinetry is strong and rectilinear. These pieces are, in effect, classical architecture in miniature: chair and table legs are shaped like columns; cabinets are constructed with elements that mirror friezes and pediments.

Yet neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns. Ormolu — or elaborate bronze gilding — was essential to French design in the 18th and 19th centuries as a cornerstone of the neoclassical and Empire styles.

As you can see from the furniture on these pages, there is a bit of whimsy in such stately pieces — a touch of lightness that will always keep neoclassicism fresh.

Imposing 19th Century Bronze Torchere, by Coutan
Located in Brighton, Sussex
This very fine patinated bronze figural torchere modeled as a classically clad female musician holding a mandolin and a marble torch. This symbolic representation of Music, falls within Coutan’s allegorical work. We have a number of marble pedestals this Torchere would stand on. Inscribed on base: Coutan, Thiébaut Frères, Fondeurs. Jules-Félix Coutan (22 September 1848 – 23 February 1939) is considered to be one of the most gifted French sculptors and designers of the 19th and early 20th centuries Coutan studied under the renowned Pierre-Jules Cavelier at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was awarded the Prix de Rome in 1872; after his return to Paris he executed the fountain group France Bearing the Torch of Civilization for the Exposition Universelle (1889), one of the two prominent sculptural commissions for the Exposition grounds.[1] Later he taught at the École des Beaux-Arts from 1900, where he expressed his disdain for the researches of Rodin— fumiste—[2] and the Impressionist sculptors who followed him. Coutan was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905.[3] Coutan is best known in the United States for the sculptural group above the entrance to Grand Central Terminal in New York City. For Grand Central Terminal, Coutan was contracted to provide a quarter-size scale plaster model of the three-figure allegorical Transportation group, which he developed from 1911 through 1914. The carving was performed by the William Bradley & Son of Long Island City.[4] Among Coutan's students were Hippolyte Lefèbvre, Raymond...

Larger-Than-Life Patinated Bronze Bust of President William H. Taft
By Frederick Ernst Triebel 1
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A very fine and larger-than-life and very realistic museum quality patinated bronze bust of President William H. Taft (1857–1930) by Frederick Ernst Triebel (American, 1865-1944) cast by Nelli Foundry in Rome, Italy. William H. Taft, the 27th President of the United States and Jurist, is depicted with his renown thick mustache and wearing a bow tie, vest and coat. Inscribed on the back: F.E. Triebel. Sculp and Fond. Nelli, Roma, circa first quarter 20th century. Due to its size, subject and high quality, this bust was probably commissioned for a Museum or public exhibition, such as an embassy or government building, the same way as other similar works by the sculptor. The Roman foundry operated by the Nelli family during the last quarter of the 19th century cast works for many leading sculptors of the day, including Alfred Gilbert and Anton van Wouw...

A Patinated Bronze Statue of a Seated Greek Scholar signed Moreau

A patinated cast bronze statue of a classically draped Greek scholar sitting sideways on a Klismos chair with the trademark griphons as front leg supports, the subject holding a pen in his right hand and an open scroll on the other left signed "Moreau" inscribed on one side of the chair. There are no visible foundry marks. Presumably the signature stands for Mathurin Moreau, a 19 Century French sculptor born 1822, and son of noted sculptor Jean Baptiste Moreau. In 1841, the 19 year old Mathirin entered the École des Beaux Arts in Paris and, the following year, won the Second Grand Prix de Rome with his sculpture Diodemus removing the Palladium.
