This is a prime example featuring three sharp, cuboctahedral crystals in a saturated, seafoam green tone. The fluorites have multi-stepped faces along their sides and central faces that are smooth, acting like windows into the translucent crystals. The crystals’ lustrous sheen further highlights their intricate structure. They have formed atop a contrasting matrix (host-rock) of bladed, beige dolomite crystals. Exceptional pair of vintage large scale brass elephant sculptures. One is larger, one is slightly smaller but they both stand over 2 feet tall! Each elephant’s trunk reaching upward, a symbol of good luck. These are beautifully crafted with detail in the modeling. The artist took care to represent the folds in the ears, creases in the skin, and spine on the backs. Elephants are revered by many, but are considered sacred in Hindu and Buddhist religions. The raised trunks are said to bring prosperity and protection to those in their presence.
This commanding brass elephant figurine stands over two feet tall, offering an impressive sculptural presence that commands attention. Crafted from substantial brass, the form is richly detailed. Since graduating with an industrial design degree from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, Zhipeng Tan has focused on the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. Through this foundry process, rich in heritage and tradition, Tan explores his interest in organic forms. Often inspired by his environmental surroundings, such as water and plants, he explores anthropomorphic themes, as well. Though trained as an industrial designer, he has become an accomplished self-taught sculptor, eagerly exploring the elastic and permeable boundaries between art and design and finding a harmonious fusion of sculpture and furniture, provocative objects of both beauty and utility.
Though from his early work, one may sense the influence of Joan Miró, Henry Moore and Constantin Brancusi, and in his more recent pieces there is a nod to the Post-Pop sensibilities of Jeff Koons and Takashi Murakami, the work of Zhipeng Tan is thoroughly original, an expression of his exuberance and imagination.
