Wood-Fired Ceramic Vase by Paul Chaleff
By Paul Chaleff
Located in Atlanta, GA
A stoneware vase by Paul Chaleff (1947-) made in 1984. Chaleff is known for his wood fired ceramic vessel without glaze or sometimes natural ash glaze. The vase on offer is of a highly geometrical form with handcut multifaceted lower body that rises and morphs into a rounded upper body with two hand-molded ears above the shoulder. The surface shows nice firing color variations due to the iron oxidation in the kiln and also carved lines left intentionally by the artist. It is marked with the artist's incised signature and date 84. This piece has a very strong Japanese wabi-sabi appeal which is the aesthetic influence of the artist's work and makes a visually arresting center piece for any interior.
"Paul Chaleff is known for his large-scale wood fired ceramic sculptures and vessels. He also created a large body of wheel thrown functional vessels. His vessels are strongly influenced by Japanese pottery, especially the work of one of Japan’s National Living Treasures, Takeshi Nakazato. Chaleff was one of the first American potters using a Japanese style Anagama kiln and became a leader in the introduction of this form of wood-burning kiln.
In 1989, he began a regular collaboration with the British sculptor Sir Anthony Caro. Over a period of thirteen years, they created nearly 50 works, both figurative and abstract. Caro’s sculpture has had direct influence on Chaleff’s work as has the sculpture of Isamu Noguchi, and the ceramics of John Mason...

Pisgah Forest Ginger Jar with Lid, North Carolina Art Studio Pottery, 1930s
By North Carolina Pottery
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Beautiful rounded ginger jar with lid features complex green craquelure glaze; the glaze is fluctuating between forest green and deep celadon green hues, is in high gloss finish, and is smooth to the touch. The inner surfaces are finished with semi-gloss off-white glaze.
The jar is in good vintage condition; it is marked and dated on the bottom with one of the earlier, round marks, "N.C. Pisgah Forest West Ashville, Route 19" with the date and potter at the wheel logo (see Kovel's American Art Pottery Marks, p. 149).
Inspired by the Arts
Crafts Movement, Walter B. Stephen and his mother began their first pottery, Nonconnah, near Memphis, Tennessee about 1904. Without prior experience, they produced slip-decorated pottery of exceptional merit. Stephen moved to Skyland, North Carolina, in 1913, where he established a second Nonconnah Pottery, the first full-time art pottery in the state. In 1926, Stephen began the operation of his third pottery, Pisgah Forest. Here he explored Oriental glazes and forms, pioneered the first crystalline glazes in the South, and developed his cameo wares which resemble English Wedgewood jasperwares. Pisgah Forest and Nonconnah pottery have gained national recognition from numerous museums and private collectors. Major exhibitions of Stephen’s work have been held at the Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC, the Asheville Art Museum, the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Tennessee, American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California, the McKissick Museum in Columbia, SC, North Carolina Museum of History, Raleigh, NC, and Southern Highland Craft Guild, Asheville, NC.

Hand-Sculpted Ceramic Pitcher with Faces by Rolando Regino Porras, Oaxaca, Mex.
By Rolando Regino Porras
Located in Brooklyn, NY
This striking hand-sculpted ceramic pitcher was created by Rolando Regino Porras, son of the renowned Oaxacan ceramicist Dolores Porras, whose legacy has profoundly shaped the region’s folk art traditions.
Each face adorning the vessel is meticulously modeled by hand, giving the piece a rhythmic texture and a sense of collective expression. The artist uses natural, organic pigments to paint the flowing black hair and warm terracotta-toned faces, resulting in a surface that feels both alive and deeply rooted in Oaxacan aesthetic heritage.
The glossy finish enhances the sculptural details and brings out the subtle variations in tone and texture. This work embodies the continuation of a family tradition that merges indigenous techniques, surreal form, and personal symbolism—a true testament to the living legacy of Oaxaca’s ceramic...

Vitrix Hot Glass Studio Oversized Mug or Vase, NY Art Glass, 1983
By Thomas Buechner III, Vitrex
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural Organic Modern oversized mug was hand blown with thin layer of white glass underlying the deep, jewel-like dark purple fused glass in abstract pattern that is swirling around the gentle curves of the piece; the whole structure is enclosed in thin layer of clear glass in sommerso technique, adding depth and definition to the piece. The central part of the pattern is brough up close to the surface, creating a light texture and adding rare tactile quality to the piece; the upper and lower parts of the pattern are receding into the white background, accentuating the curving sides of the mug. Minimal shape of the piece allows the bold flow of the pattern to take the center stage, and clear glass handle offers minimal distraction from the design while adding functionality. The piece can be used either as a mug or a vase due to large, generous size.
The piece is signed and dated in etching on the bottom; rare, hard to find example of vintage Vitrix glasswork would make a great gift to any studio glass or art collector.
Founded in 1979 by brothers Matthew and Thomas Buechner III in Corning's Market Street District, Vitrix Hot Glass...
