Sculptural, heavy Mid Century Modern clear glass decorative vase or vessel was created by Carl Erickson for Erickson Glass Works. The vase is decorated with controlled bubbles that are radiating upwards from its base; asymmetrical, free-flowing rim juxtaposes the regular bubble's pattern, guiding the eye along the lines of the piece.
The vase is signed by the artist in etching on the bottom; it is in good vintage condition with slight, age-appropriate signs of use on the bottom. This piece will work very well in any style of interior or would make a great gift for an art and design enthusiast.
Carl Erickson (1899-1966) worked at Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, joining his father as an apprentice and spending the next 20 years developing a high level of craftsmanship, including precision use of controlled bubbles, a technique often associated with Pairpoint, that was widely used by Erickson in his own glass designs. In the early 1930s he was employed by Libbey Glass and from 1937 - by the Blenko Glass Company. After leaving Blenko, Carl founded his own art glass studio in Bremen, Ohio in 1943. Erickson glass was hand blown, so no two pieces could be identical. Erickson made reproductions for a number of museums, including the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C., Old Sturbridge Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, and the Ohio State Historical Society Museum. Many of his glass creations have been selected for display at several distinguished museums, and in 1953 a traveling display...

Jon Kuhn is one of the foremost glass artists in his field, creating highly intricate architectural glass art sculpture that has won world-wide acclaim. He received BFA from Washburn University in 1974, MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1978, and Honorary DFA from Washburn University in 2006. Jon Kuhn early work was done in molten glass, but currently he works in cold glass that is cut, polished, and fused, resulting in sculptures that take in surrounding light, then reflects and refracts it back; they appear to change color and radiance when viewed from different angles and lighting. Kuhn creates cold glass art in a variety of shapes and forms, but he is perhaps best known for his glass cubes which contain a colorful glass interior cased in clear glass. Richard Marquis for Noble Effort Murrini Vase, American Art Studio Glass

Vintage art glass vase features cylindrical body with free flowing decor or large murrini and canes on light celadon blue background. The rim is accentuated with light purple glass band, and the colored glass body is encased in clear glass layer in sommerso technique, creating a clear glass base that visually elevates the piece by adding an illusion of floating above the surface.
The vase is signed and dated in murrina on the bottom; it stands 10.75" tall.
Richard Marquis (b. 1945) studied glass blowing under Marvin Lipofsky, who established a glass program at University of California at Berkeley in 1964. In 1969 Marquis receivied Fulbright grant to travel to Venice to observe glassmaking techniques; following up the advise of Dale Chihuly, who visited Murano on a Fulbright in 1968, Marquis went to Venini glassworks on Murano. As one of the first American studio glassmakers to travel to Italy to study traditional Venetian techniques, Marquis learned about murrine, a canne, and incalmo techniques that he would base his Master of Arts thesis for the University of California on, and later teach to other American studio glassblowers at schools across the country, including Penland School of Crafts, Pilchuck Glass School, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the University of California, Los Angeles.
