Franz Xavier Bergmann, Sculptural Bud Vase, Vienna Bronze, circa 1900
By Franz Bergmann
Located in New York, NY
Dimensions Height: 7.25 inches Width: 5.25 inches Depth: 4.5 inches. Markings Fully marked on the bottom with a "B" in an urn-shaped cartouche (for “Bergmann”), and “GESHUTZED” (German: “PROTECTED). ABOUT What distinguishes this unique bud vase from others is a perfect synthesis of a utilitarian object and a Fine sculpture. It is not only the amazing subtlety and taste of the author’s artist skills, but an extraordinary design and an absolutely outstanding original plot. Designed for a single flower only, it is nonetheless a very complex and multifaceted composition filled with warm humor and fantasy. Sitting on a vessel shaped as a gourd, clasping its goat legs with hooves and holding on to the neck with one hand in order not to fall of it; a playful and mischievous faun holds by the tail a fleeing lizard with the other hand. FRANZ XAVIER BERGMANN (Austrian, 1861–1936) was the owner of a Viennese foundry who produced numerous patinated and cold-painted bronze oriental, erotic and animal figures, the latter often humanized or whimsical, humorous objects d'art. Cold painted bronze refers to pieces cast in Vienna and then decorated in several layers with so-called dust paint; the expertise for the mix of this kind of paint has been lost. The color was not fired hence "cold painted". Mainly women working...

Glass Vase Cytisus Decoration Lemon Yellow Green Blue Loetz circa 1902 Austria
By Loetz Glass
Located in Klosterneuburg, AT
Austrian Jugendstil glass vase "Cytisus Lemon Yellow" decoration Johann Loetz Witwe yellow green blue circa 1902 The “Cytisus” decoration is certainly one of the most exquisite decor variations created by the Loetz glassworks. With its shimmering gold particles, it reflects the secessionist ornamentation of turn-of-the-century Vienna. In this way, Max Ritter von Spaun and his collaborators proved that they had their finger on the artistic and aesthetic pulse of the times. Executed in the form of a reduced flower calyx with five indentations in the wall and a five-pass distorted mouth, this vase fits into the style of production around 1902. The fused crumbled dots seem to float on the vase like lightweight gold particles. The complex decoration as well as the technically elaborate glass body are evidence of the great mastery of the glassblowers in Klostermühle and show why the Johann Loetz Witwe glass manufactory was one of the leading producers of precious luxury glass in Vienna 1900. Riessner Kessel Amphora Turn Teplitz Two-Handled Vase with Iridized Glaze
By Reissner Stellmacher Kessel
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This striking amphora Art Nouveau vase was made in the Turn-Teplitz region of Bohemia by Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel, established in 1892. The vase has an ovoid form with a thick molded floral and foliate band located at the neck. The body of the vase rests upon a raised pedestal foot decorated with a series of intertwined stylized roots. The neck and foot have been glazed in a matte green color with burnished gold highlights. The body of the vase is flanked by a pair of arched gilded handles made in the form of naturalistic woody branches. The body of the vase has been finished in a mottled matte glaze executed in a dull gold color enabling the cream color beneath to show through. The center of the vase transitions to a violet hue which is covered by a high glaze iridescent band having pink and purple undertones. The iridescent band features an armorial crest executed in black accented with gilded details. The crest itself consists of a checkerboard shield surmounted by a trio of stylized flowers with a spade motif, all of which are flanked by lions rampant. The design includes a series of large dots arrayed in a symmetrical manner. The opposite side of the vase echoes the motif found on the front and has a checkerboard shield, nine spade-shaped flowers and several dots. The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As an antique item, the piece shows minor signs of age and use consisting of wear to the gilded decoration. The vase stands 11.75" tall and is 2.25" across the mouth. The foot is just over 5" in diameter and bears impressed marks including a circular ''Imperial Amphora Turn...

Antique Paul Dachsel for Riessner, Stellmacher and Kessel Amphora Porcelain Vase
By Amphora, Paul Dachsel
Located in Cincinnati, OH
This early 20th century Art Nouveau porcelain vase was designed by Paul Dachsel for Riessner, Stellmacher & Kessel Amphora of Turn-Teplitz, Bohemia. The piece has an organic squash-like form and features Dachsel's distinctive ribbed mouth design at the top. The body of the vase is flanked by two delicate arched arms with reticulated detail. This ivory porcelain vase has a blush colored body with gilt accents at the foot and handles. The front and back piece have been hand-painted with a floral motif in a Japanese style and feature the images of gilt accented purple orchids with long green leaves. The ribbed mouth is finished in a matte green that echoes the color of the foliage and also has gilt highlights. An example of this shape with similar decoration can be seen on page 66 of Richard L. Scott's 'Ceramics From The House Of Amphora 1890-1915. The vase is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or repairs. As an antique item, the piece shows appropriate signs of age consisting of wear to the gilded decoration. The vase stands just over 6" tall and is 2" as measured from the furthest points of the mouth. The foot is just over 2" in diameter and bears the RStK burnt in mark reading "RStK TURN Teplitz...

Large Austrian Neoclassical Style Porcelain Vases by Royal Vienna
By Royal Vienna Porcelain
Located in London, GB
Large Austrian Neoclassical style porcelain vases by Royal Vienna Austrian, Late 19th Century Height 98cm, diameter 32cm Crafted by the prestigious Royal Vienna Porcelain Manufactory, this exquisite pair of vases embodies the centuries-old tradition of European porcelain artistry. Designed in an elegant baluster form, each vase features a deep navy ground, providing a striking backdrop for the finely hand-painted historical tableaux. The slender necks are adorned with delicate gilded patterns, further enhanced by ribbon-tied accents and raised gilded jewels, a particularly coveted element in high-quality porcelain. Matching porcelain lids, crowned with a pinecone finial, complete the sophisticated design, while the spreading socle bases mirror the decorative motifs of the necks. The vases depict four significant historical events, masterfully reinterpreted from renowned artworks. One scene illustrates King Charles V liberating Christian slaves in Tunis, inspired by a 19th-century engraving by Nicaise de Keyser (Belgian, 1813-1887). Another portrays the Battle of Bouvines (1214), based on an 1827 painting by Horace Vernet (French, 1789-1863). A third panel brings to life Oliver Cromwell dissolving the Long Parliament, adapted from a 1782 print by Benjamin West (American, 1738-1820). The final scene, inspired by Jan Matejko’s (Polish, 1838-1893) 1866 painting ‘Rejtan’ (also known as ‘The Fall of Poland’), represents the first partition of Poland in 1773. The Austrian porcelain artists have reimagined these compositions with richer, more luminous colours, infusing the scenes with energy while softening their dramatic intensity. Supporting these vases are ornate porcelain plinths, decorated with oval cartouches featuring additional painted vignettes. The undersides of the lids are inscribed with the corresponding scene titles. These include: Der letzte Reichstag zu Warschau (The last parliament in Warsaw), Karl V als Befreier der christlichen Sklaven in Tunis (Charles V as liberator of the Christian slaves in Tunis), Cromwell verhindert die Verfolgung des Waldenser (Cromwell prevents the persecution of the Waldensians), Bataille de Bouvines (Battle of Bouvines). Each piece bears the blue ‘FD/ VIENNA / AUSTRIA’ mark for Franz Dörfl. With their grand proportions, historical depth, and remarkable artistic execution, this pair of vases is an extraordinary acquisition for any collector of fine European porcelain.
