Large Antique Italian Blue and White Lidded Urn, 19th Century
Located in Dallas, TX
This stunning lidded urn might have once been found in a 19th century Italian apothecary. The front of the shaped urn body has the hand-painted phrase “C. Violaru”, which is the heavily abbreviated form of the Latin word for violet (violaceum). Up until the mid-1700’s, apothecaries would make syrups from violets and use it to treat kidney ailments. Above the Latin wording is a whimsical musical scene with a man blowing a horn leading a couple who is holding hands over rocky terrain lined with shrubbery. A large house and trees can be seen behind the trio with a pair of mountains in the distance. On the opposite side of the urn is a floral display with a bird perched on a rock. Beneath the bird is a geometric design, possibly a stylized sun with radiating beams of light. Both scenes are segmented by a pair of thin quarter round moldings that encircle the entire vase. Other hand-painted motifs include floral and foliate margents, geometric patterns, and Vitruvian waves that are infilled with horizontal fluting. The sides of the urn have a fish-scale background beneath two mustachioed mascarons. Both men have been styled in grotesque fashion, with a pair of spiraled horns emanating from their heads. In between the horns is a looping handle that is affixed to the body in similar tight spirals. The domed lid has three scrolled arms that merge in a geometric finial. The base color of the urn is white, with illustrations in a monochromatic cobalt oxide blue, reminiscent of Delft blue pottery...

Italian Early 19th Century Solid Porphyry and Ormolu Urn, circa 1810
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
A magnificent and monumentally scaled Italian early 19th century solid Porphyry and ormolu urn, circa 1810. The most impressive urn is raised by a circular base with a fine stepped and mottled border. At the center is an impressive and most decorative reeded design below the smooth elegantly curved body with richly sculpted scrolled handles at each side. Above the curved neck is the removable lid also decorated with a beautiful reeded design, mottled band, and centered by a striking ormolu acorn finial. All original gilt. Porphyry was Imperial Rome’s most prestigious stone for columns, vases, and other objects. The word “porphyry” comes from the Latin word for purple, which was the color of nobility to the Romans. Porphyry is considered the Imperial Stone of the Roman Empire. In the year 18 AD, the Roman Legionnaire Caius Cominius discovered a beautiful purple stone in the eastern desert of Egypt. It was a deep purple color with flecks of larger white crystals and was perfect for carving. This porphyry quickly became the most prestigious stone for the elite of Rome and Byzantium. For centuries the Romans quarried this treasured stone...

PAIR OF ANTIQUE 1870 GRAND TOUR BRONZE MARBLE CLODION BACCHANALIA CASSOLETTEs
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
Royal House Antiques Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this absolutely exquisite pair of 1870 Grand Tour Bronze, Gilt Bronze and Marble Bacchahalia Cassolettes after Cloudio A very finely cast and finished pair of Napoleon III period vasiform urns, they are an exquisite sand-cast creation utilizing bronze and gilt bronze to create an extraordinary contrast between materials. The body of the vase is rich in a dark-brown patina that positively glows around the bas-relief Bacchanalia scene of putto playing a tug-of-war type game, carrying wine glasses and bunches of grapes and one walking with a thrysus raised over his shoulder while roaring animal heads flank either end with polished bronze garlands of water-leaves and berries draped between. The lids and necks are crafted of gilt bronze, which gives a cooler tone to the brilliant shine of the metal. The urns are raised over a shaped marble base and finished over a polished bronze rim affixed on the underside with slotted screws. After the models by Claude Michel Clodion. For those of you that are unaware the “Grand Tour” was something educated young people did in the 18th and 19th century to learn and further educate themselves on other cultures, they would pick up small medium and large trinkets as memories of the journey which would sit in pride of place in their library or study as conversation pieces when friends and relatives would visit, they basically proved you were well educated, well travelled and a person of culture. These pair are large, decorative and very important looking pieces of Italian Grand Tour art...
