Material: Murano Glass
Vintage Mid Century Murano Glass Bowl in Matte Green with Orange Accents
Located in Milano, IT
Many are the different types of glass created by master makers on the Venetian island of Murano. From air-thin vases to expressive sculptures, also massive objects with deep and vivid hues of colour represent the great skills of glassmakers. The present bowl, most certainly made with a hint of uranium in the glass fuse to give it the peculiar greenish tone, is a perfect example of how attractive massive Murano glass can be. It can be dated approximately to the mid 1960s, based on the style and colors of the piece. Unsigned, as most pieces of that era, it shows great craftsmanship, and is preserved in beautiful conditions. No cracks, dents or damages of sort are visible, and just a light patina proves it is actually a 50 years old object.

Carl Erickson Sculptural Vase, American Art Studio Glass 1940s-1950s
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Sculptural, heavy Mid Century Modern clear glass decorative vase or vessel was created by Carl Erickson for Erickson Glass Works. The vase is decorated with controlled bubbles that are radiating upwards from its base; asymmetrical, free-flowing rim juxtaposes the regular bubble's pattern, guiding the eye along the lines of the piece. The vase is signed by the artist in etching on the bottom; it is in good vintage condition with slight, age-appropriate signs of use on the bottom. This piece will work very well in any style of interior or would make a great gift for an art and design enthusiast. Carl Erickson (1899-1966) worked at Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, joining his father as an apprentice and spending the next 20 years developing a high level of craftsmanship, including precision use of controlled bubbles, a technique often associated with Pairpoint, that was widely used by Erickson in his own glass designs. In the early 1930s he was employed by Libbey Glass and from 1937 - by the Blenko Glass Company. After leaving Blenko, Carl founded his own art glass studio in Bremen, Ohio in 1943. Erickson glass was hand blown, so no two pieces could be identical. Erickson made reproductions for a number of museums, including the Smithsonian Institution of Washington, D.C., Old Sturbridge Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Corning Museum of Glass, and the Ohio State Historical Society Museum. Many of his glass creations have been selected for display at several distinguished museums, and in 1953 a traveling display...

20th Century Carlo Scarpa Venini Lattimo Vase "a Mezza Filigrana", 50s
Located in Turin, Turin
In 1921 Venini and Cappellin opened a glass factory called Vetri Soffiati Muranesi Cappellin Venini & C. on the islands of Murano, the historic glass production centre in the lagoon of Venice, Italy. With Luigi Ceresa and Emilio Hochs as investors, they arranged to purchase the recently closed Murano glass factory of Andrea Rioda, hire the former firm's glassblowers, and retain Rioda himself to serve as technical director of the venture. Venini embarked on collaborations with architects and designers such as Cini Boeri, Tomaso Buzzi, Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Tapio Wirkkala, Gae Aulenti, and Massimo Vignelli. The ethos was to "take the Murano tradition of glass blowing and combine it with the French fashion industry's tradition of using designers". Here you can see a small lattimo vase "a mezza filigrana" realized by Venini on Carlo Scarpa...

Explore the Collection of Authentic Murano Glass Vases on 1stDibs

Immerse yourself in the world of authentic vintage Murano glass vases, which elevate any dining setting with their dramatic colors. The collection of Murano glass decorative objects on 1stDibs includes bottles, bowls, sculptures and other vessels and furnishings.

Every vintage Murano glass vase is unique. These captivating objects are made of Murano glass, named for the Venetian island of Murano, where glassmaking has been practiced for centuries, using a variety of artisanal processes. The glass is identifiable by its richly layered colors and characteristic gold or silver flecks inside the glass.

Authentic Murano glass often has small imperfections and irregular shapes due to the freeform creation process. This glass introduces truly dazzling hues and provocative forms to your dining table, and mid-century Murano glass is particularly sought after by today’s collectors.

One of the earliest Venetian glass furnaces is believed to have been established as far back as the 8th century. While Murano glass is traditionally known for being blown glass, there are also Murano glass beads and mosaics, and the art of Venetian glassblowing has seen a range of different techniques evolve over the course of its long history. These techniques include calcedonio, millefiori and more, and enameling and gilding are also practiced at the furnaces. The celebrated filigrana technique is as old as Renaissance-era Italy, with origins in the 16th century.

This striking chandelier was created using the rigadin technique, which involves blowing the glass into a special bronze mold with grooves that leave an imprint on its molten surface, resulting in either decorative swirls or a ribbed effect.

There are many Murano glassmakers who have gained renown all over the world.

Ercole Barovier left an indelible mark on the world of Italian modernist glassmaking, for example — his vibrant use of color and exploration of innovative techniques yielded glass vases, chandeliers and other lighting and decorative objects that stand out in any interior many decades later. Barovier’s manufactory was eventually renamed Barovier Toso, a name under which the company still operates today

Archimede Seguso, whose company was later renamed Seguso Vetri D’Arte, redefined a 650-year family history of Murano glass-making with brilliance and novel techniques, elevating him to an exemplar for the maestros of his time as well as for future generations of glassmakers.

Founded in 1921 by Milanese lawyer Paolo Venini and antiques dealer Giacomo Cappellin, Venini Co. played an important role in pairing forward-thinking modernist designers with skilled glassblowers. In Venini’s early years, the firm was led by visionary art directors Napoleone Martinuzzi and Vittorio Zecchin, and would eventually collaborate with Gio Ponti, Massimo Vignelli and Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala. In 1925, Venini earned the Grand Prix at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts — the design fair that introduced the Art Deco style to the world.

The story of Salviati glass, which supported the revival of Venice’s flagging Murano glass industry in the 19th century, began with Vicenza-born lawyer and entrepreneur Antonio Salviati whose love of Murano glass art and mosaics inspired him to establish his own mosaic and glass manufacturing firm.

Find authentic antique and vintage Murano glass vases on 1stDibs.
