Louisville Pottery Company Daniel Boone Rare Mauve Mid Century Modern Kentucky
By Louisville Pottery Company
Located in Mobile, AL
The Louisville Pottery company used a variety of stamps and sold to touristy shops with marks including Cherokee, Great Smokey Mountains, Daniel Boone, Mammoth Cave, Kentucky Hand Made and more. Most of them are small pitchers and vases in traditional forms. But, then there are occasional exceptions and over time we have all learned that major designers including Frederic Hurten Rhead (over at Selden Bybee) were working in the area. Research is ongoing to identify the examples designed and/or influenced by well known artists or simply a great relatively unknown designer or two deserving of recognition for their work. The JB Speed Art Museum cataloged a slightly smaller gloss green example Accession number 2007.10.9 with the Cherokee Pottery...

Glen Lukens Signed Early Midcentury Glazed California Pottery Weed Pot Vase
Located in Studio City, CA
A very rare early work featuring a dark chocolate brown glaze by master Mid-Century Modern ceramist/potter Glen Lukens whose work has become quite collectible and relatively scarce and difficult to find. The work is signed and dated (1924) by Lukens on the underside (we have only seen one other piece dated this early and that piece is in the Forrest Merrill Collection). Lukens was the founder of the University of Southern California (USC) Architectural School’s Ceramics Department where he helped establish and promote clay pottery as a universally acceptable art form. The current popularity of Studio Pottery and ceramics is widely accepted to have started with Lukens who is oft credited with being one of the first artists to raise the stature of Mid-Century Modern Studio Pottery within the art world. Lukens is famed for his experiments with various glazes and glazing techniques. His influence and glazes can be clearly seen in the works of Otto and Gertrud Natzler, Beatrice Wood, James Lovera, etc. He was also known for combining bright, colorful textile glazes (using natural, organic materials and elements he found in the Mojave Desert, Palm Springs, and Death Valley to make what he referred to as "California Colors") with the rough and raw clay surfaces of his often rudimentary forms and vessels. Lukens currently has an award in his name (Glen Lukens Award) at the University of Southern California's School of fine Arts. A very rare, unique, and truly special work This piece would be a tremendous stand-out addition to any collectors of Lukens' work or Mid-Century Modern ceramics collection or eye-catching accent piece in about any setting, modern or otherwise. A must-have. Lukens work can be found in various museum collections including: Arizona State University Art Museum, Tempe, Arizona Huntington Library...

24-Piece Collection of Blue Niloak Midcentury Pottery
Located in Topeka, KS
Handsome 24-piece collection of bright blue Niloak midcentury pottery. They are all in fabulous vintage condition apart from the small glossy glazed Dutch shoe. It sounds like it is cracked but I cannot visually see a crack. The rest appear to have no chips, cracks, or chiggers, and very light crazing if any. Please see photos. We are selling this as a complete 24-piece set. Five pieces are not marked. They are noted in the list, circa 1937-1947. Holy cow! Blue, blue, my love is blue……! I had never seen this much Niloak in one place before obtaining this collection. And all in one color. It is so gorgeous! What better way for you to jump right into the blue trend in decorating. These will be incredible whether you display them all together in one place or scatter them about. Someone spent years at and put in a lot of love into gathering these beauties. Please see below for list and sizes. Niloak is a line of pottery which was produced in Benton, Arkansas by Eagle Pottery Company. Eagle was found in 1890s by Charles Dean Hyten and his brothers. By 1904 Eagle was the largest pottery-ware business in the Benton area. Then in 1909 Arthur Dovey joined Hyten, by then the sole owner, to develop an operation to produce art pottery. Thus, began Niloak. The name Niloak is the spelling of kaolin reversed. Kaolin is the main ingredient of porcelain. Niloak was and is best known for their Swirl pottery resembling marbled paper. Then in 1932 Niloak transitioned from hand thrown products to slip-cast and mold-pressed production which was spearheaded by Stoin M. Stoin. These 62 Hywood shapes were simply marked on the bottom Niloak. Beginning in 1939 new shapes were added that provided a lip and the bottoms of pieces were able to be glazed. Because of the war effort many materials were regulated which were used in the Niloak glazes and clay, so the recipes were reformulated. After the war regular production resumed and new bright glazes were used. By the end of 1947 Niloak was no more. List of pottery items with sizes: • Southern belle planter 10 H x 8 W x 8 D inches • Dutch shoe gloss glaze 2.25 H x 2.25 W x 4.5 D inches • Winged Victory swirl vase 6.5 H x 3.75 W x 3.75 D inches • 2-handled baskets 3.25 H x 3 W x 3 D inches • Rocking horse planter...

Monumental 1990s Biomorphic Karen Karnes Boulder Vase with Violet Glaze
Located in Southampton, NJ
A truly monumental c1990 stoneware boulder-form vase by master potter Karen Karnes. What makes this unique pot stand out is its sheer size and stunning violet glaze. Later in life Karnes returned to the more biomorphic forms she explored earlier in her career in the late 1940s-early 1950s of which this is an exceptional example. Bio. from wikipedia. Karen Karnes (November 17, 1925 – July 12, 2016) was an American ceramist, best known for her salt glazed, earth-toned stoneware ceramics. Early life Karnes was born on November 17, 1925 in New York City,[2] where she attended art schools for children. Her garment worker parents were Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants, and the family lived in the Bronx Coops. Karnes applied for and was accepted to the High School of Music & Art. As a child she was surrounded by urban realities and visual influences, but she claims that her parents' old-world ideals kept her grounded. At Brooklyn College she majored in design and graduated in 1946. After graduating, she studied abroad in Italy, where she continued to study ceramics. After returning from Italy, Karnes began a graduate program at Alfred University, but left before completing her degree to work at Black Mountain College. Black Mountain College Karnes first encountered Black Mountain College in 1947, where she took a summer design class with Josef Albers. In 1952, she and her husband David Weinrib (whom she later divorced) moved down to North Carolina to become potters-in-residence at the Black Mountain College. While at Black Mountain College, Karnes and Weinrib became acquainted with Merce Cunningham and John Cage, and later lived with them at the Gate Hill Community. During the Pottery Seminar held at the College in 1952, Karnes met international potters Bernard Leach, Shoji Hamada, and Marguerite Wildenhain, as well as Karl Martz...
