ODETTA QUIMPER Art Deco Stoneware Vase, 1920
By René Beauclair
Located in Saint-Amans-des-Cots, FR
A stunning French Art Deco stoneware vase by the renowned René Beauclair (1877-1960), produced at ODETTA, Faïencerie de la Grande Maison HB Quimper, France, ca.1920. The vase features the distinctive Shape #512 and is decorated with the rare and sought-after Decor #1321bis, which is a particularly limited design, making this piece all the more unique. With its elegant, geometric form and meticulously executed decoration, this vase exemplifies the sophistication of the Art Deco movement.
Measuring 8.3" (21 cm) in height and 8.1" (20.5 cm) in diameter, this vase is in excellent condition, reflecting the exceptional craftsmanship of its maker. A remarkable and rare example of French Art Deco ceramic art, it would make an impressive addition to any collection.
From 1903, Jules Verlingue, at the head of the Faïencerie de la Madeleine, in Boulogne-sur-Mer, produced stoneware.
In December 1913, a fire destroyed part of the Faïencerie de la Madeleine. The factory being poorly insured, its owner was forced to sell to Boulogne banker Henri Delcourt. Jules Verlingue will remain director of his former establishment. The funds from the sale will be used by him, in association with Louis Delcourt, doctor of law and brother of Henri, to acquire, in 1914, the earthenware factory of his friend Guy de La Hubaudière, in Quimper.
When the Faïencerie HB restarted in 1917, everything was refurbished and equipped.
In 1923, under the impetus of Jeanne Malivel and René-Yves Creston, the “Ar Seiz Breur” (Seven Brothers) movement was born. This group of Breton creators aims to revive Celtic art. suffocated by classic taste, modernizing it and adapting it to everyday life. This period is extremely rich, encouraged of course by the antistical Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements.
The HB Jules Verlingue and Bolloré factory is not lagging behind, thanks to the collaboration of the sculptor René Quillivic...

Art Nouveau Rozenburg "Viper and Cockscomb" Eggshell Porcelain Covered Bottle
Located in New York, NY
In this exquisite covered bottle designed by Samuel Schellink for Rozenburg, a dynamic viper is depicted in an aggressive, poised stance. Its head is raised and swaying rhythmically, hissing loudly as it coils tightly, baring its fangs in preparation to strike. The viper’s distinctive zigzag pattern of green and sienna scales serves both as camouflage and a warning to potential threats. Adding to its intrigue, the snake incorporates mythological elements, including a “beard” of two hairs. This bearded serpent motif, rare and symbolic, appears across various Classical contexts and media, including Greek, Etruscan, Roman, and Egyptian art and literature. Interpretations of this motif vary: some see the serpent as male, while others view it as an anthropomorphic deity. The bottle stopper is stylized like a flame, enhancing the dynamic and otherworldly character of the design. The sides of the bottle are adorned with twisted cockscomb flowers, their coral-like blooms characterized by tightly clustered, crinkled, and ridged textures. These flowers hold religious significance, often planted outside temples in India and China. Together, the bottle evokes an exotic image of beauty and danger, conjuring the allure of distant lands and referencing the origins of the fragrance’s ingredients for a Western audience.

The Loetz glassworks existed in Klostermuhle, Austria, for just over a hundred years, starting from 1840. But its heyday was during the life-time of Max Ritter Von Spaun, grandson of the original Johann Loetz who had founded the company. Von Spaun took over the company in 1879 and ran it until 1908, a year before his death. He was assisted by Eduard Prochaska, his technical specialist, and together they invented, designed and produced a whole series of wonderful new types of glass, taking out several patents and winning awards at all the major world exhibitions during the 1890's and the first years of the new century.
The Loetz company were amongst the leaders in Art Nouveau design and expecially in irridescent art glass. "Papillon" glass, like the vase on the left, is sometimes known today as "oil spot" glass. Another favourite Loetz colouring was irridized glass with pulled trails called "Phenomenon" glass. There were irridized vases with ribbons of metallic colours winding over the surface, and many spectacular designs with applied trails of beautiful colours, or simply pulled out of the body of the glass to form handles or decoration.
About 1900 the company started collaborating with outside designers, and some great artists designed pieces for Lotz, notably Joseph Hofmann, Koloman Moser, Maria Kirchner, and Hofstatter.
In 1908 Loetz was taken over by Max Von Spaun's son, also called Max, and although it struggled financially (going through bankruptcy in 1911 and again in 1931) there were several great designers whose work was produced by Loetz during those years and through the art deco period. These included Adolf Beckert...
