Mid-Century Modern Vases

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by celebrated manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

Generations turn over, and mid-century modern remains arguably the most popular style going. As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

A Set of Four Blown Glass Pieces by Claude Morin, 1970s – Dieulefit - France
Located in SOTTEVILLE-LÈS-ROUEN, FR
This beautiful set consists of four unique pieces crafted by master glass artist Claude Morin in the 1970s in Dieulefit. It includes an elegant bottle, two harmoniously shaped vases, and a delicately crafted catchall. Each piece is signed by the artist, ensuring authenticity and uniqueness, and the set is in perfect condition, preserved without any flaws or wear, making it a true treasure for lovers of fine glasswork. Handcrafted using traditional glass-blowing techniques, the pieces feature organic lines and subtle shades, signature elements of Morin’s style, which emphasized simple yet profoundly expressive forms. The bottle stands out with its graceful, elongated shape, while the two vases offer a beautiful symmetry and aesthetic balance. The catchall is gently curved, adding a natural decorative touch. Eight 1960s Clear Glass Italian Empoli Duck Dog Fish Decanters Bottles and Vases
Located in Haarlem, NL
Very decorative rare clear glass set of eight different size Italian pressed glass bottles. This set is almost completely animal themed, a duck, a poodle, a dachshund and two fishes. But also a pressed Brutalist large cognac glass a petite blown glass carafe and a pressed so called 'corset' carafe. Mention Italian glass and probably everyone’s mind immediately leaps to Venice and Murano. But there is another almost equally famous centre of Italian glass making known as Empoli. Empoli glass is generally much simpler and does not have the intricately applied trim or decorations associated with Venetian and Murano pieces. The simple traditional styles of Empoli glass were quickly adapted to the abstract shapes of mid 20th century modernism. It became hugely popular as a decorative home accent, and was exported across the world. Now they are highly sought after by international collectors and look beautiful arranged together. All bottles have their stopper and are different in design, shape and size (height with stopper): Duck shaped genie bottle, 40cm high, 13cm wide, 12cm deep (15.7" x 5.1"x 4.7") Poodle bottle 38cm high, 14cm wide and 8cm deep Dachshund Wiener dog bottle 36cm high, 10cm wide, 9,5cm deep Fish decanter...

Green Opaline Jadeite Glass Trumpet Vase, Empoli Italy, 1960s
Located in Glasgow, GB
An elegant pale green opaline glass trumpet vase, attributed to Stelvia of Empoli, Italy, likely produced as part of the Opalina Fiorentina range, circa 1960s. This mid-century vase is a fine example of jadeite glass—a softly translucent type of opaline glassware popularised by Stelvia and echoed in the work of Murano glassmakers during the same period. Handblown in mint green opaline glass, the vase features a classical trumpet silhouette: a flared conical body tapering into a rounded base, poised on a slender stem with a gently splayed foot. The opaline surface captures ambient light beautifully, producing a softly luminous, milky glow characteristic of the Stelvia opaline glass from this era. Measuring 18 cm in height and 12 cm in diameter, the vase is in very good vintage condition. A single, pinpoint chip to the outer rim is visible only under close inspection and has been clearly documented in photographs. There are no cracks, repairs, or clouding to note. It works beautifully as a standalone glass accent or grouped with other Italian opaline glass vessels in complementary pastel shades such as lilac, baby blue, or alabaster. A timeless piece for collectors of vintage Italian glassware...
