20th Century Cockatoo Solid Silver Porcelain Claret Jug, Asprey Co c.1912
By Asprey Garrard Limited
Located in Royal Tunbridge Wells, Kent
Antique early-20th Century English solid silver and mounted on Spode Copeland's China novelty wine jug, in the form of a standing cockatoo, set with coloured glass eyes and white porcelain body imitating textured plumage, mounted with a realistically modelled silver head and feet. Hallmarked English silver (925 standard), Sheffield, year 1912 (u), Maker A&CoLt (Asprey & Co Ltd). The world-famous English luxury manufacturer and retailer Asprey & Co started as a small silk printing business by William Asprey in Mitcham, Surrey. Soon the company largely expanded its offering by purchasing some other firms. By 1847 Asprey moved to its iconic premises at New Bond Street in London and established its flagship store, where one could buy all ranges of exquisite goods, from books to dressing cases with silver details. At the International Exhibition in 1862, Asprey high-quality dressing cases won a gold medal, which brought the company a worldwide reputation for exquisite craftsmanship. The Royal Warrant, which was awarded by her Majesty Queen Victoria the same year, just perpetuated that reputation. Since then, Asprey has received a Royal Warrant from every British monarch. Besides dressing cases, the company produced and retailed a wide range of exclusive goods, including silver, gold, jewelry, stationery, cutlery, tableware, etc. In the 20th century, commissions poured from all over the world and by the 1920s Asprey created them not only for British Royalty, but for foreign Royals and heads of states as well. The most sensational orders of all were the exquisite pearl necklace for Queen Mary and the teak and silver traveling trunks for the five beloved wives of the Maharaja of Patiala. The 20s and 30s were the golden era of the Art Deco style, of which Asprey was a big adopter, many of its luxury goods from that time became iconic, such as Asprey cigarette cases...

Just back from our silversmith's workshop where it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory. Dating to c.1920, it remains in superb condition measuring 14" x 9 1/2" x 1/2". In 1880 William Gibson and John Lawrence Langman acquired premises at 112, Regent Street, London and founded The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company. The firm produced a wide range of items from solid silver tableware and cutlery, jewellery and watches to electroplaters, trophies and surgical instruments. In 1898 the expanded and well-known firm became a limited company and added "Ltd" to its name. The abundant advertising activity of The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd left numerous illustrations of their products. The company also became a distinguished dealer in diamonds and precious stones and a popular retailer of items by other silversmiths such as Harrison Brothers & Howson, William Comyns, Martin Hall & Co Ltd, W&G Sissons, among others. Antique Sterling Silver Mug
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
A fine and impressive small antique 17th century English sterling silver mug; an addition to our silverware collection. This fine and impressive antique William & Mary* sterling silver mug has a cylindrical tapering form. The surface of this hand raised silver mug is embellished with the impressive engraved chinoiserie decoration depicting simplified figures farming. The decoration to the body incorporates an organic bordered cartouche ornamented with the contemporary engraved initials 'SH'. The body of this sterling silver mug is further embellished with bands of tooled decoration, in addition to applied moulded decoration to the upper and lower rims. This 17th century silver mug is fitted with an impressive cast silver S scroll handle ornamented with thread decoration. Such examples from this period are rare to the market and becoming increasing difficult to locate. * This period of history saw the co-reign of King William III and Queen Mary II from 1689 until her death in 1694. Mary was the princess royal and daughter of Charles I and William III, who was also known as William of Orange, was the sovereign Prince of Orange from birth, Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders, and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic from the 1670s. NOTE: After surviving the Great Fire of London the records at the London Assay office were destroyed by fire in 1681; their catalogues and documentation began again in 1697. Due to this unfortunate event we are unable to associate a maker to this mug. Condition This 17th century silver mug is an excellent gauge of silver, excellent quality and in excellent condition. The engraved decoration is all crisp in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the mug are very clear. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of this small antique silver...
