“Doodle” is a rough drawing made absent-mindedly. And this is how Maya Leroy’s project started, from a need to create without having to be too serious about it or overly think things while having fun. Air dry clay has proven to
be an ideal medium to work independently and without firing and, funny enough, from this total freedom, Maya created an intriguing and psychedelic series which looks unlimited. Opening up to new collaborations, SEM became fascinated with this form of hand crafting with the aim of developing two special objects—created ad hoc by Maya for the milanese brand—in an unlimited series produced by the artisans of the brand’s net.One of the most interesting phenomena of the moment is, in fact, the way in which hands-on designers can bring innovations in craft ateliers, challenging and updating the existing techniques and materials, or simply questioning them and creating a real dialogue between craftsman and designer that has unexpected results.
MAYA LEROY
Born in 1994 to a Swedish mother and French father, Maya Eline Leroy is an artist and designer currently based in Eindhoven — The Netherlands. Expressing creativity through painting, drawing and hand-building clay. Her Doodle series is an ever expanding collection of unique, hand build and hand painted contemporary ceramics.

This unusual and rare terra cotta vase with a glazed turquoise interior
(and other glazed portions: manes, tails, hooves and eyes), is dated 1949
on the bottom in pencil and marked "Desert Kilns Arizona."
Also inscribed in pencil on the bottom: “Merry Christmas from Bill Benton.”
We are not certain who the recipient was but the vase was owned and given as a gift by Bill Benton, a Senator from Connecticut who wintered in Arizona. He was a friend of Frank Lloyd Wright in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s when Arizona and Phoenix in particular had a very active art community.
Known in Arizona in the 1960s as an instructor of pottery and sculpture at the Desert School of Art in Scottsdale and also as the wife of artist Lew Davis, she was born in New York City and studied with Raoul Josset and Walter Lemcke.
In 1938, she began exhibiting at the Art Institute of Chicago. She married Davis and they moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where she maintained a studio. Her sculpture is in numerous collections including that of International Business Machines...

An early 20th century barro negro or black clay botijo, hand made and signed ROCA CAUS VERDU on the handle, by the famed pottery company, Roca Caus, in the village of Verdú in the Catalan region of Spain, circa 1900. This beautiful utilitarian pot, with its wide belly, top handle, and one mouth where it's filled and one mouth called a pitón or pitorro to drink from, is a traditional porous clay Spanish vessel originally designed to contain water. The botijo is a typical element of Spanish culture and can be found in nearly every rural town and varies in shape, color, and material depending on the area. The Verdú jugs are known for their ability to keep water cool and very fresh because of their porosity. The expression "they always cry" is well known. Today, this antique clay jug can be used as a vase, stand alone conversation piece, or grouped with other pieces of blackware on a table, shelf or kitchen counter. “Doodle” is a rough drawing made absent-mindedly. And this is how Maya Leroy’s project started, from a need to create without having to be too serious about it or overly think things while having fun. Air dry clay has proven to
be an ideal medium to work independently and without firing and, funny enough, from this total freedom, Maya created an intriguing and psychedelic series which looks unlimited. Opening up to new collaborations, SEM became fascinated with this form of hand crafting with the aim of developing two special objects—created ad hoc by Maya for the milanese brand—in an unlimited series produced by the artisans of the brand’s net.One of the most interesting phenomena of the moment is, in fact, the way in which hands-on designers can bring innovations in craft ateliers, challenging and updating the existing techniques and materials, or simply questioning them and creating a real dialogue between craftsman and designer that has unexpected results.

Expressing creativity through painting, drawing and hand-building clay. Her Doodle series is an ever expanding collection of unique, hand build and hand painted contemporary ceramics.
