The use of rare and exotic materials such as the coconut became popular across Europe during the Middle Ages, when it was believed that these unique materials from distant lands possessed mystical powers. It was held that they could detect, and even deter, the effects of poison and as such were employed as drinking vessels, often mounted with ornate embellishments of silver. As more trade routes opened up during the 16th century, materials such as the coconut became more widely available, though still only afforded to the wealthy minority in Europe and England. And, while they eventually lost their appeal for their magical powers, coconuts proved an ideal material for cups and pots and retained their popularity as such. This exceptional antique George V sterling silver hip flask has a plain rectangular rounded form.
This impressive flask has a subtly curved form proffering a comfortable fit in the majority of pockets.
The surface of the flask is plain and unembellished.
This impressive antique flask is fitted with a plain domed hallmarked hinged cover with bayonet fitting.
This George V flask retains the original full hallmarked detachable push fit drinking cup which features the original gilt interior, this drinking vessel is a large example for its type.
This flask has been tested and is water tight and ready for use.
To ensure the flask remains water tight, the cork should be moist and therefore fully expanded to provide an effective seal.
There are two recommended methods to ensure the cork does not dry out and shrink:
Method one: Keep fluid in the flask at all times, and keep the flask on its side to ensure the cork remains wet.
Method two: Fill the flask to the brim with fluid and close. Leave it like this overnight, or 24 hours if possible, before use.

This antique Victorian silver christening mug has a circular, subtly tapering rounded form onto a circular spreading foot.
The body of the mug is embellished with exceptional embossed and chased decorated angel/putto* head designs, accented with wing motifs to the nadir.
The body of this large mug is further ornamented with large ribbon bow motifs and floral festoons, encompassing the aforementioned portrait designs, all within an arabesque band and matte background.
The decoration to the body incorporates a vacant shaped cartouche to the anterior.
The lower portion of this Victorian silver christening mug is encompassed with a plain applied girdle, above further chased floral designs within a shaped-scalloped border.
This mug is fitted with a cast silver angular handle with leaf decorated bifurcating terminals, in addition to impressive ribbon and leaf ornamentation to the upper portion of the handpiece.
This exceptional example of Victorian silverware retains the original gilding.

This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver spoon celebrating Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee has a plain oval form.
The anterior surface of the handle is embellished with a variety of commemorative subtly gilded scenes separated by scrolling ribbon ornamentation accented with the scene depicting wording 'Peace', 'Commerce', 'Electricity', 'Rifle Volunteers', 'Steam' and 'Penny Postage'.
The reverse surface is ornamented with the insignia of the Star of India including the motto 'Heavens Light Our Guard' above a further scrolling ribbon design incorporating the wording 'Indian Empire', 'Canada', 'Australasia' and 'Cape Colony' amidst undulating laurel branches.
The lower portion of the reverse of the handle includes part hallmarks beside the inscription 'In commemoration of the 60th year of the most glorious reign of H.I.M. Victoria Empress & Queen - 1837-1897 -'.
The shaped terminal of the handle is ornamented in the form of the Imperial State Crown to both the anterior surface and reverse.
The anterior surface of the bowl of this Diamond Jubilee commemorative spoon incorporates an impressive gilded scene depicting prestigious figures raising their crowns and surrounding the throne mounted Queen Victoria.
