An important and extremely large pair of Magenta Ground Vienna Porcelain Exhibition vases.

Each vase with blue underglazed ‘Beehive’ mark to interior of neck.
Each vase is finely painted with classical scenes to the front and allegorical scenes to the back on a rich magenta ground with gilt foliate decoration. The vases are mounted by extraordinary gilt handles headed by winged female masks to the sides and grotesque masks to the shoulders. The spreading necks decorated with Greek key decoration are surmounted by domed covers and the vases are raised on baluster form supports put down on drum bases finely painted with panels stylised arabesque.
The Vienna Porcelain Manufactory was founded in 1718 only eight years after Johann Friedrich Bottger and Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus had succeeded in unearthing the secret of Porcelain Manufacture for August the Strong, Elector of Saxony. On May 25, 1718, Emperor Karl VI signed a "special privilege" awarding Claudius Innocentius du Paquier the exclusive right to produce porcelain in the Austrian crown lands. Production being almost exclusively for the imperial household and the court nobility.
During the rococo era, Empress Maria Theresia placed the company under imperial ownership and it was during this period that the manufactory began to produce the famous rococo genre scenes after Watteau. Under the management of Conrad Sorgel von Sorgenthal, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory achieved an international reputation for its neo-classical style.
After the wars with France brought the manufactory to the brink of ruin, the Vienna Congress at the beginning of the Nineteenth Century gave porcelain from Vienna a renewed upswing. Many important personalities of the time, including Czar Alexander I of Russia...

French “Bleu de Nevers” Faience Smoking Service Tray, by Montagnon

This lovely French “service fumeur en faïence”, or earthenware smoking service, has five pieces: a tray, and four pots of various sizes. Although every smoking set is unique, we presume theses pots are a tobacco pot to store the dried leaves, an ash receptacle, a pot for holding papers to hand roll cigarettes and/or cigars and a pot for keeping matches.
Our set was produced in Nevers, France in the 19th century by Montagnon, the oldest earthenware factory in France. Originally called manufacture du Bout du monde (“End of the World factory”), the factory was founded in 1648. By 1875, the factory had fallen on hard times and was bought by Antoine Montagnon. Within the five years, it was the only faïencerie left in Nevers. Montagnon was successful for over a century but eventually ceased operations in 2015. The production date of our smoking service set is from the late 1800s.
Glazed earthenware was introduced from Italy to Nevers in the mid-16th century. The town already had existing porcelain factories and the area was flush with clay deposits that could be used in pottery. This allowed the influx of Italian potters in Nevers to begin producing Faience pieces. For the next 300 years, Nevers was the center for French Faience manufacturing.

Haviland Limoges oval bowl features Marseille (or Schleiger 9) shape; it is decorated with elaborate floral motifs in blue, pink, light green, and mocha brown colors on both inner and outer surfaces. The bowl has complicated asymmetrical shape with elaborate textured details on both rim and the handle. Marseille shape was introduced in late 1880s and quickly become one of the most popular lines of Haviland china in 1890s. In factory catalogues this piece is often listed as a vegetable server; in contemporary tablescape it can be used as a salad, fruit, or chips bowl or a side dish serving bowl.

Patterns similar to our English King were first used in France and England late in the eighteenth century and have remained among the most popular styles for>flatware today, in both Europe and America. Tiffany & Co. first made its own version of English King in 1885. It harmonizes with any eighteenth-century-inspired style neo-Georgian, Colonial, Louis XVI, Sheraton, Chippendale, Adam or Hepplewhite. The rich, intricate decoration of Tiffany's English King pattern reflects the luxurious entertainments given during the latter part of the eighteenth century and will enhance and give a sense of occasion to present-day settings.
Designed by Charles Grosjean (1841-1888). Grosjean worked in his family's firm which produced high end silverware to prominent New York City retailers, including Tiffany. Upon his father's death, Grosjean left his family firm to become superintendent of Tiffany's silver factory in 1868. He had great background in silver and was an artist and was referred to as "one of the best living decorators of silver".
