Arts and Crafts Serveware, Ceramics, Silver and Glass
ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE
Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.
The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.
American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.
Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

The antique set of cup and saucer was created by Charles Field Haviland and hand painted by a professional artist in a decorating studio. The rare, hand to find blank features a streamlined flat cup form with a sculptural detailed handle. The artist painted 3 different landscapes of lakes or large rivers, surrounded by hills with lush vegetation; 2 of the landscapes include small boats on the water. The highly detailed, beautifully executed landscapes are prominently placed on the bottom and the side of the cup and in the center of the saucer and framed with gold trim, with crisp white color of semi-translucent porcelain serving as a matting. The rims and the handle are accented with gold trim.
The pieces are marked with the green underglaze CFH/GDM marks, dating to 1882-1891, and overglaze artists initials in gold. The set is in very good antique condition with minimal wear on gold that is appropriate to its age. We are offering a set of sugar bowl and creamer, decorated by the same artist with the landscape views in the same style, and most possibly a part of the same service, in a separate listing.
The advent of Arts and Craft Movement created the notion that the aesthetic quality of everyday utilitarian objects could be improved by merit of craftsmanship, and many painters and artists felt inspired to merge their activities into decorative arts, such as ceramics, decor objects, or dinnerware. Large number of wholesale and retail firms, such as Pickard, Stouffer, or Brauer studios, and many high-end department stores that carried factory decorated Limoges's porcelain, had their own china decorating departments and produced high quality hand painted porcelain. This beautiful quality and marvelous design tile serving tray is another one of our recent decorative finds and an absolute joy to own and to look at. We have recently listed on 1stdibs one of the largest, single tile serving trays and this is a similar, but smaller one. This fine specimen too is antique, hand-crafted AND hand-painted and this tile could not be in better condition also. There are absolutely no cracks in the porcelain tile and the glazed surface made sure that the hand painted colorful flowers with some insects and the stunning branch and leafs patterns have not faded at all. There is an elegance about the wonderfully flowing motion with which the beautifully colored flowers and leafs and branches are painted and that makes this antique an absolute joy to look at. The good size and thick tile is inlaid perfectly in the naturally beautiful and stylish branches frame and the strong handles on either side make it easy to use as well.
