In 1885 Tsar Alexander III commissioned a lavish Easter egg for his wife, Empress Maria Feodorovna. The Coffee server stands roughly 21.50cm. high to the top of the lid, is approximately 22.00cm. across to the tip of the handle and weights 698 grams. It bears the French Government's Head of the Minerva 1 hallmark, certifying a minimum of 950 sterling silver, in addition to the Henin Freres sterling silver manufacturer's hallmark and is stamped "Boin-Taburet a Paris 49213 16" on the underside. The Teapot is roughly 18.50cm. high to the top of the lid, approximately 22.50cm. across from the tip of the spout to the outside of the handle and weights 701 grams. The Hot Chocolate server stands roughly 22.00cm. high to the top of the lid, is approximately 21.00cm. across to the tip of the handle and weights 733 grams. The elegant Sugar Bowl stands approximately 17.00cm. high to the top of the lid, roughly 13.50cm. across to the outside of the handles and weights 560 grams. This is a superb coffee pot made in England between 1800 and 1825. The pot is made of pearlware and has a very charming blue transfer printed pattern of fallow deer in a snowy landscape with farm buildings. This transfer print looks like an early 19thC print; as we couldn't identify the maker it was impossible to date it exactly. A charming detail is that the rim of the cover and the footrim, which are printed with a row of houses, both are printed up side down; this was probably done by children, who often did the smaller transfer prints because their little fingers could handle the thin strips of paper better than adults. The coffeepot is unmarked. There is an old shop label on the underside stating it is "English, probably Spode" - however, although this pot is certainly English, it is certainly not Spode. CONDITION REPORT The coffee pot is in good antique and usable condition without any damage to the pot or the spout; there are just some chips off the lower rim of the cover, which are not visible when in position and are inconsequential for using the pot. Small teapot, square, rounded body on flat unglazed base. Curved handle and a short straight spout. Small upright mouthrim, flat lid with round knob. Imari decorated in iron-red and gold on the sides with flowering plants and grasses and two deeply recessed kidney-shaped panels with modelled decorations in high relief. One panel with a cock, chicken and two eggs on the other a bird perched on a branch of a prunus tree. Round the base of the spout an upturned pointed leaves pattern border. On the handle a floret between scrolls. On the cover round the base of the knob a leaves pattern border in low relief. In category 36 'Coloured Imari with no underglaze blue, iron-red and gold only' of his Japanese export porcelain, Impey states that the implication of this singular restriction of palette, without the use of underglaze blue, is that these may be the product of a single enamelling workshop, but may or may not be the product of a single kiln. The restriction is probably one of choice, for it would hardly be cheaper, if at all, to use a wider range of enamels, and no cheaper to use underglaze blue. Bottles, vases, teapots and other objects with similar recessed panels that form a kind of window through to a deeper picture layer were only produced for a short period. This was probably because they were too time-consuming to make and therefore expensive. This type of decoration is only found on Japanese pieces; Chinese imitations are still unknown.
