This large pole was “donated to a church on the northern tip of Vancouver Island for a fundraiser” sometime around 1905. The pole is carved in a folk-art style that is correct for the period. The imagery on this pole is quite fascinating and includes a large bird whose wings form the face of a composite creature holding what appears to be a whale or fish. Below that is what appears to be a Sisiutl, or three-headed sea serpent. Under the Sisiutl is a pair of animal heads flanking the pole, perhaps wolves, over a colonial bald eagle. This striking bowl is by renown master potter Lonnie Vigil of Nambe Pueblo.
Made from hand coils of micaceous clay, the surface is then slipped with micaceous clay and traditionally pit fired. Micaceous clay is so rich in the mineral mica that the mica's tiny gold-colored flakes impart a softly glowing, subtly textured surface to the finished pottery.
So it is not just the form, but the surface that is so stunning on this beautiful piece. The bowl was fired to a deep golden orange, with the surface patterned by fire clouds. These fire clouds are varied in coloration forming an exquisite pattern on the surface of the bowl.

This old model Salish pole dates to around 1900 and was sold out of the Hudson Bay Fur Trading Co. in Seattle, WA. The pole depicts an inverted killer whale, although the identities of the other figures are unclear. There is a formline human face in profile carved in relief and painted on the front of the base. A rather unusual feature of this pole is the inlaid glass beads in the eyes of the figures and blowhole of the whale. Early model poles sometimes incorporated new, non-traditional materials into their work. A highly unusual and early pole. Northwest Coast cedar totem with original Hudson Bay sticker.
