French Empire Louis Napoleon Bonaparte (1808-1873) was Emperor of France from 1852 to 1870 under the name of Napoleon III. In a way, the artistic codes of the Napoleon III style, also called Second Empire style, were presented at the Exhibition of 1844, during the reign of Louis-Philippe d'Orléans. The second Empire style, also known as the Napoleon III style, is a highly eclectic style of architecture and decorative arts, which uses elements of many different historical styles, and also made innovative use of modern materials, such as iron frameworks and glass skylights. It flourished during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III in France (1852–1870) and had an important influence on architecture and decoration in the rest of Europe and North America. Major examples of the style include the Opéra Garnier (1862–1871) in Paris by Charles Garnier, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Church of Saint Augustine (1860–1871), and the Philadelphia City Hall (1871–1901). The architectural style was closely connected with Haussmann's renovation of Paris carried out during the Second Empire; the new buildings, such as the Opéra, were intended as the focal points of the new boulevards. Early 20th Century Green Marble and Gilt Bronze Table Lamp
Located in Richmond, London
A superb quality gilt bronze mounted urn in Verde Antico marble, now fitted as a table lamp. France or Italy, late 19th – early 20th century. Why we like it This table lamp is crafted from rare Verde Antico marble, quarried in Larissa, Thessaly, Greece. Known for its deep green color and distinct white and black veining, this marble is valued among collectors and designers for its unique character and scarcity. The stone is paired with finely cast gilt bronze mounts that provide a pleasing contrast and add subtle elegance to the piece. Verde Antico marble is considered rare and historically significant. The Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones at Oxford University Museum of Natural History catalogue entry 566. (143.2) reads: “Another of a lighter green, with white and more definite black markings. The two amazing tables in the Galleria degli Animali in the Vatican Museum are of this type. (Very rare).” Image attached to the listing. The Galleria degli Animali, or Hall of Animals, was created during the papacy of Pius VI (1775–1799) as a “stone zoo” of sorts, using ancient sculptures that were often restored and occasionally reimagined. This ambitious project brought together prominent artists of the 18th century, including Francesco Antonio Franzoni from Carrara. The artworks in this space reflect themes of nature and hunting, with coloured marbles chosen to suggest the textures and colours of animal fur, feathers, or to create eye-catching contrasts. See last two images in the listing. Combining Verde Antico marble with high-quality gilt bronze accents, this lamp is a distinctive piece that brings historical character and timeless appeal to any space. May be wired for any country. Lampshade not included. Height without shade: 53 cm / 21 in. Would you like to see more beautiful things from our collection? Exceptional Pair of 19th Century Gilt Bronze and Enamel Candelabra
Located in Long Island City, NY
An Exceptional Pair of Late 19th Century Napoleon III Gilt Bronze and Enamel Ten Light Candelabra Attributed to Maison Beurdeley The ten candle foliate designed branches with leaf drip pans, centered with an enamel vase and a gilt band with cherubs at play, topped with three bronze drapes and garlands of flowers. The triangle bases decorated with female masks and trailing floral motifs on plinth bases. After the 18th century model by Pierre Gouthière. This fine pair of candelabra are based on the model by Pierre Gouthière now conserved in the Petit-Trianon at Versailles. According to Pierre Verlet, the model corresponds to a large pair of candelabra with ten branches, drapery, foliage and fruit, richly carved and gilded in bronze, originally supplied by the marchand-mercier, Freres Darnault, for the Salon du Jeu de Mesdames at the Château de Bellevue. Pierre Gouthière (1732 – 1813) was the most celebrated bronze gilder in France during the eighteenth century, the title of ‘Gilder to the King’ being given to him by Louis XV. He perfected the most expensive type of gilding of this period, dorure au mat, which involved the use of lavish amounts of gold to create a rich, deep matte finish. As well as working for the King he created items for the Comte d’Artois, the Marquis de Marigny, and the duc d’Aumont. The collection of the duc d’Aumont was sold at auction in Paris in 1782 and many objects mounted by Gouthière were bought by Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. His works, unsurpassed in creativity and execution, can now be found in the Wallace Collection and the Louvre. Beurdeley, Louis-Auguste and Emmanuel-Alfred (1808-1882 and 1847-1919). The firm exhibited and won awards at all of the major international exhibitions during the second half of the nineteenth century. The quality and skill employed in production was of exceptional quality; their ormolu mounts with mercurial gilding and hand chasing were often difficult to distinguish from late eighteenth-century examples, and were considered the finest in Paris. The firm was pioneered by Jean Beurdeley (1772-1853), later managed by his son Louis-Auguste-Alfred, and finally imparted to his son Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis in 1875. The firm was established at 32 and 34, rue Louis-Le-Grand, and also owned the pavillion de Hanovre, where it was based while Alfred-Emmanuel-Louis added two additional workshops at 20 and 24, rue Dautancourt by 1875. The Beurdeley workshops closed in 1896, although still partially active until 1898 and the stock was sold over a number of auctions conducted by the Galerie Georges Petit of Paris. Two auction catalogues of the collection were published in 1895 and sales were held between March 6-8 and May 27-28. Among Beurdeley’s most prestigious clients were Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, the duc D’aumale, Richard Wallace, the Duc and Princess d’Hamilton, Tsarine Alexandra Féodorovna, The Rothschild and Vanderbilt dynasties and the Metropolitan Club...

Antique Ormolu Table Lamps and Other Ormolu Lighting for Sale on 1stDibs

Able to double as task lighting, table lamps can illuminate darker corners of a room, and antique ormolu table lamps and other ormolu lighting can be incorporated into a variety of spaces.

Your style of decorating doesn't have to necessarily have to be rooted in neoclassical design in order to tastefully introduce ormolu — while demand for the material and/or technique was at its peak in Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, ormolu table lamps, desk lamps and other ormolu furniture and decor are still widely loved by contemporary designers and collectors.

What is ormolu?

Ormolu is a brilliant form of decorative trickery. To the untrained eye, ormolu table lamps, clocks, jewelry boxes and other ormolu furniture and decor look like they're made of solid gold. But those in the know recognize ormolu — or elaborate bronze gilding — as having been essential to French design in the 18th and 19th centuries as a cornerstone of the neoclassical and Empire styles.

“Most commonly, ormolu refers to a bronze object that has been covered with gold, typically 18 karat or 24 karat,” explains Jamie Sinai, director of the antiques specialist Mayfair Gallery, in London. “For that reason, ormolu is sometimes called gilt bronze or, in French, bronze doré. Strictly speaking, however, the term ormolu also denotes the technique of applying gold to a metal.”

“The word comes from the French or moulu, which translates as ‘ground or powdered gold’ — the form the gold takes before it is applied to a metal surface.”

From the court of King Louis XVI to that of Napoleon I, the French elite snapped up furniture mounted with ormolu, as well as sconces, candelabra and table lamps made from the material.

If you're looking to bring a touch of this 19th-century pizzazz to your desk, an antique ormolu table lamp is a decorative touch that blends ornament and functionality. Perfect for lighting your nightstand or reading nook, table lamps play an integral role in styling an inviting room, and a well-crafted ormolu table lamp does more than provide light; the right fixture-and-table combination can add a focal point or creative element to any interior.

Today, antiques collectors and interior designers seek out the finest in ormolu clocks and continue to prize ormolu for its extraordinary craftsmanship and history-infused glamour.
