He experimented in scriptwriting and then needlepoint, opening a shop where he experimented with unusually coloured yarns. It's clientele included designers from Herme`s and Valentino. Rosenthal was one day asked if he could design a mount for a gemstone, setting his career in a new direction.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Nicholas Bonner studied landscape architecture in the UK. During a study trip to China in 1993 he visited North Korea, and subsequently set up Beijing-based Koryo Tours, specializing in tourism to the DPRK. Since 2001, Bonner has produced three documentaries and a feature film on North Korea. He is the author of Phaidon's bestselling Made in North Korea.

When Benedikt Taschen asked the most important portrait photographer working today, Annie Leibovitz, to collect her pictures in a SUMO-sized book, she was intrigued by the challenge.
