The last chapter of these fascinating volumes includes conversion tables to various standard national measure ranging from the Paris foot to the Russian archine, to the Venice braccio, the Egyptian stadium to 'The mathematical foot of China'.
GEORGE ADAMS the younger (1750–1795) was an English scientist, optician and scientific writer. In politics Adams was a Tory, and as such was received with favour at court by George III, who made him his official mathematical instrument maker, succeeding his father George Adams in the post. George III was personally interested in instruments and had Adams produce items for him exclusively, many in silver. Contemporary straight-grained tan morocco gilt by Fazakerley of Liverpool, the covers with gilt floral designs, the stems and leaves outlined in gilt, the flowers depicted with dark brown morocco inlays, the border of 4 gilt fillets with stepped corners enclosed within an outer single gilt fillet, the spines gilt in 6 compartments divided by raised bands, titled in gilt in 2 and dated at the foot, the other compartments decorated with fleurons surrounded by foliate cornerpieces, turn-ins ruled in gilt, top edges gilt, others trimmed; extremities lightly rubbed, unobtrusive small marks on spines; occasional light foxing and offsetting.
Provenance: F.E. Dinshaw (armorial bookplates and pressmark labels); William Robinson (bookplates bound in after front free endpapers), and W.A. Foyle Beeleigh Abbey library bookplate in red morocco pasted into front cover, in both volumes.

Condition: Internally clean and bright, armorial bookplate of Sir John Eden to front pastedowns, extremely minor foxing to first and last leaves, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spines fine, a handsom set.
Additional information: An exceedingly rare gothic novel by Robinson (known as "the English Sappho") set during the French Revolution. In her lifetime Robinson was better known as an actress and lady of fashion as well as for a string of prominent affairs, including with George IV whilst he was still Prince of Wales whose portrait she wore encrusted with diamonds throughout her life but who she did not hesitate to blackmail for £5000 pounds when he cast her off. Her literary output, though derided at the time, has since been reassessed and Robinson herself now seen as a proto-feminist.
Mary Robinson was one of those independent 'viragos' who upset so many conventional men at the end of the eighteenth century. She was admired by Mary Wollstonecraft...
