Located in Colorado Springs, CO
1812 "United States of Nth America -- Carte des Etats-Unis De L'Amerique Septentrionale" Two-Sheet Map by Tardieu This attractive map, published in Paris in 1812, is one of the most rare large format maps from the period. It features a view of the East Coast of the U.S. from Maryland to just below South Carolina. Additionally, Ellicott’s plan for the City of Washington D.C. is included at the top right and an illustration of Niagara Falls is shown at the bottom right with a description in both French and English. This extremely detailed map not only depicts the mountainous regions of the southeastern U.S., but also includes names of regions, rivers, and towns. Based on the first state of Arrowsmith’s 4-sheet map of the United States, this map is completely engraved by Tardieu in Paris and showcases high quality engravings. This detailed map of the recently independent United States includes one of the largest and earliest examples of the Ellicott plan of Washington DC. The artist, Pierre François Tardieu (PF Tardieu) was a very well-known map engraver, geographer, and illustrator. Levasseur s 1852 Cartographic Portrait of Gironde: Celebrating the Bordeaux Wine
Located in Langweer, NL
This original hand-colored map is from the "Atlas National Illustré," a work by Victor Levasseur, a French geographer and cartographer known for his richly illustrated maps. The map is a steel engraving, which was a common and precise method for creating maps at the time. The inclusion of the publisher's name, A. Combette from Paris, and the addresses of the various contributors to the map's creation, like the engravers Laguillermie and Rainaud, adds to the historical context of the piece. The margins of the map are adorned with detailed illustrations that serve as a visual encyclopedic reference to the region's geography, economy, and notable figures. The use of color along the boundaries makes the map not only a tool for navigation but also an educational resource, providing insights into the department's landscape, economy, and cultural significance. The text included in the map's design provides statistical information, a map legend, and discussions about the land, local curiosities, notable personalities, products, and commerce, which would have been invaluable for education and reference at the time. The 'Atlas National Illustré' is celebrated for its combination of cartographic detail and artistic embellishment, making it a valuable cultural artifact. It represents the height of decorative map-making in the 19th century, alongside the works of John Tallis and Archibald Fullarton. This uploaded image is a detailed and colored map of the Département de la Gironde from Victor Levasseur's "Atlas National Illustré." Similar to the other maps from this series, it features a central map with the title 'Dépt. de la Gironde' at the bottom. Surrounding the map are decorative vignettes and elements that bring to life the cultural and economic aspects of the Gironde department. On the left, there is likely statistical information about the department and its subdivisions, reflecting the population and administrative details. This is framed by images that may represent the local industries and natural resources, such as wine, which is a central feature of the Bordeaux region located within Gironde. The right side of the map contains a textual history and descriptions of the region, coupled with portraits of notable figures, possibly historic personages or contributors to the region's cultural and economic development. The illustrations often include agricultural products, symbols of commerce, and scenes of daily life, as well as architectural landmarks. The presence of wine bottles, barrels, and vineyards in the illustrations would be indicative of the Gironde's prominence in wine production, particularly Bordeaux wines, which are esteemed worldwide. These engravings serve to emphasize the richness of the land and the sophistication of its products. Maps from this era, especially those by Levasseur, are notable for their combination of art and education, providing a snapshot not only of the geography but also of the societal and economic conditions of the time. The detailed engravings also suggest that this map was as much a decorative piece as it was a functional one, intended for display and reference by those interested in the illustrated region. The Gironde department in France is renowned for its significant contribution to the wine industry, particularly through the Bordeaux wine region. A bit more about the important places within Gironde and the types of wine the area is known for: 1. **Bordeaux**: The capital city of the department and the heart of the wine region. It's not only an urban center but also a hub for the wine trade. 2. **Médoc**: North of Bordeaux, known for prestigious châteaux and wines like Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac, and Saint-Estèphe. 3. **Saint-Émilion**: East of Bordeaux, recognized for its full-bodied red wines and the picturesque medieval town. 4. **Pomerol**: Also near Saint-Émilion, smaller than its neighbor but equally renowned, particularly for Château Pétrus...

Miniature Terrestrial Globe Newton Son London, Post 1833, Ante 1858
Located in Milano, IT
Miniature Terrestrial Globe Newton Son London, post 1833, ante 1858 Paper, papier-mâché, bronze and wood It measures: sphere diameter 2.95 in (7.6 cm); diameter of the wooden base 6.02 in (15.3 cm); height 8.36 in (21.24 cm). Weight: 2,067 lb. State of conservation: the globe still bears its original paint, but has various small gaps, abrasions and stains on the surface. The globe is hinged with two pins at the meridian circle, which is in turn inserted perpendicular to the horizon circle; this is supported by four semi-arches connected at the bottom by a small goblet-shaped foot, resting on a wooden bell-shaped base. Apart from the wooden base, the entire support structure is made of bronze; on the foot there are the scale reproductions of a compass, a telescope and an open book. The sphere is made of papier-mâché and is covered with twelve printed paper gores. In the North Pacific Ocean the globe bears a cartouche with the inscription (about 30% of the writing is illegible, but the missing parts can be easily integrated based on the rest): NEWTON’S New Improved TERRESTRIAL Globe Published by Newton Son 66 Chancery Lane LONDON On the globe, much of central Africa is empty and the great lakes Tanganyika and Victoria are not marked (Europeans would begin to explore the area after 1858). Canada is called "British Territory" and Alaska "Russian Territory" (it would become part of the United States in 1867). Australia already bears its modern name (until 1829 it had been called New Holland) and its coasts are completely designed; Tasmania is listed as an island (Matthew Flinders circumnavigated it in 1798). The routes of Cook's various voyages are plotted; both the route followed by Biscoe in 1831 and the "Land of Enderby" which he discovered on the coast of Antarctica, south of Africa, are marked. Newfoundland and St. Pierre Miquelon: Early 19th Century French Map
Located in Langweer, NL
The map is titled "Île et Banc de Terre-Neuve avec les Îles St. Pierre et Miquelon", depicting Newfoundland and the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon. It is from the Petit Atlas National series. Features: - The map is divided into two sections: 1. The left side shows Newfoundland (Terre-Neuve) and its surrounding waters, including important locations such as the Île du Cap Breton and Grand Bank fishing areas. 2. The right side focuses on St. Pierre and Miquelon, a French overseas territory near Newfoundland. - Hand-colored outlines mark the territories, with color distinctions for the different islands. - Administrative divisions and key geographic features, such as capes, bays, and towns, are labeled on the map. Here the text translated: Here is the translation of the text from French to English: **NOTICE.** The islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, the only remaining French possession in this part of America since the loss of Canada, are located a few miles from the southern coast of Newfoundland, which belongs to the English. Their relatively fertile soil is broken up by hills that give rise to small streams. **Grande Miquelon**, the northernmost of the two islands, has a circumference of about 9 to 10 leagues. It offers a convenient port for fishing boats. **Petite Miquelon**, to the south of Grande Miquelon, has a circumference of about 6 leagues. It is well-watered and well-wooded. **Saint Pierre**, to the south-southwest of the two other islands, presents a somewhat similar appearance but is devoid of trees. Although it is the smallest of the three islands, it is the most important due to the size of its harbor, which can accommodate 30 to 40 ships of various sizes, and because of its favorable coastline for the preparation, preservation, and export of cod. On its eastern coast, at the bottom of a beautiful bay, lies the town of Saint Pierre, the only notable settlement on the three islands. It is the residence of a naval officer who, under the title of Commander, governs the colony. The permanent population is about 2,000 souls, of which 800 reside in Saint Pierre. However, sailors come to the islands from the coasts of Brittany and Normandy during the cod fishing season on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1833, it was estimated that about 14,000 sailors were employed in this fishery, and the purchase of supplies required by the colony was valued at over one million francs. --- This translation reflects the original notice describing the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon, with details about their geography, population, and economic activities related to the fishing industry. Historical Context: - This map is part of a collection meant to showcase France's overseas colonies and territories, including the small but significant St. Pierre and Miquelon, which has been under French control for centuries and was a critical fishing and trading hub. - The Petit Atlas National series was typically published in the early 19th century, and this map likely dates from the same period, around 1815–1820. People searching for maps or information about Newfoundland and the French islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon use the following keywords: 1. Newfoundland map...
