These Zeiss Binoculars were primarily used by Luftwaffe Flak Artillery ground crews for spotting and identifying enemy aircraft and directing the crew served Rangefinders, Searchlights and Flak Cannons of the Anti-Aircraft batteries based around many German and occupied ports, cities and industrial centres. Due to their superb optics they naturally also proved useful on the battlefield for tactical observation and from the outset of 1939 were used in many theatres of war by the German Army.
Presented here are a very high quality set of binoculars, manufactured by Zeiss bearing the marker of 'Jumelles 12 x 60' , indicating that they would have been made between 1942 and 1944 in occupied France. This set are unpolished in original dark grey with red stripe and are fitted to a polished cradle. They are fitted with adjustable and variable light shades (marked farbglasser) for use in all daytime and darker light conditions and have the later war style rain shield...

This instrument, Mark XXXI, Mod 0, Serial No. 320420, was built under Navy contract NXss 17019 and bears its original inspection tags, confirming it passed rigorous Navy testing before deployment.
The pelorus stand is crafted in a striking combination of polished aluminum and solid brass, featuring a protective domed brass cover that reveals a beautifully preserved gyrocompass repeater dial. On the heels of WW II, the U S Government saw the need to have modern ships that could be easily converted to troop transport ships in wartime constructed with safety and speed as the top priorities. They worked in partnership with the United States Line and underwrote a great deal of the liner's finished cost of 72 million as well as the future operating and maintenance cost of this proud symbol of her country and her age. The designer of the ship William Francis Gibbs had to incorporate the requirements of the government into his designs for the great liner. From her knife-edge bow across the superstructure and a pair of massive blue white and red raked funnels to the perfect arc of her stern, she sat proudly in the water and conveyed a sense of movement and speed even when still. His design incorporated a "secret" hull, numerous bulkheads which limited the grand open spaces of most liners of the time, no flammable material used in construction and fitting out other than the Steinway grand piano...

When Marvel publisher Martin Goodman asked Stan Lee to deliver another new team book for his line of comics, he had no idea he’d be getting something like The X-Men. In fact, nobody could have imagined the extraordinary phenomenon the X-Men would eventually grow into—not Goodman, not Lee, not even the forward-thinking futurist Jack Kirby. What they started out as was a charming, ragtag team of misfits, devised by Lee and Kirby to be mutants—youngsters born with “X-tra” powers thrust upon them not by accidentally crossing paths with cosmic rays or a nuclear blast, but by the fate of birth—led by a no-nonsense professor who trained them to become heroes that could protect the world from menaces, mutant and otherwise.
The first years of storytelling laid the foundation for much of what has put the X-Men at the crossroads of comics and popular culture: Hounded by a public that fears and misunderstands them, mutantkind find themselves at the heart of their own civil rights struggle; Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman found safety amongst themselves despite the challenges that set them apart from others in society; and Professor Xavier lined up against his ideological foe, Magneto, who had assembled a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants to take the fight for their self-preservation directly to humankind.
Along the way, Lee and Kirby—who were on fire taking comics into the Marvel Age—introduced a menagerie of villains and supporting characters that would become mainstays of Marvel and its lore: the super-powered siblings Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch; the formidable Blob; the unstoppable Juggernaut; the jungle dweller from the Savage Land, Ka-Zar; the demigod from the stars, the Stranger; and Bolivar Trask and his army of mutant-hunting Sentinels. And as Lee and Kirby gave way to new talents so they could move on to new corners of the Marvel Universe, Atlas era art veteran Werner Roth teamed with writing newcomer and future X-Men legend Roy Thomas...
