An action-packed Japanese B2 poster for the 1969 British crime caper "The Italian Job," starring Michael Caine as cockney criminal Charlie Croker, fresh out of prison and planning a heist in Italy. Consistently voted one of the greatest ever British movies, the quintessential sixties film has become a cult favourite and a Classic of the heist genre, while Caine's famous one-liner "You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!" has taken on a life of its own. Despite receiving a Golden Globe nomination for Best English-Language Foreign Film, "The Italian Job" was not a success in America at the time of its release. Caine blamed its failure on a misleading marketing Campaign, explaining to Empire magazine that the US poster "was a naked woman and me. And I said, 'This is for kids. A fine lacquer decorated carved boxwood netsuke of a Noh dancer in a Hannya role, unsigned, Meiji period, late 19th century, Japan.
The boxwood netsuke finely carved as a kneeling Noh dancer dressed in striking geometric patterned robes. The actor holds an opened war fan behind their back in one hand, a Shinto wand slung over the shoulder in the other.
The war fan, tessen, decorated in red lacquer with a golden rising sun at the center. Tessen were sturdy fans used by samurai as protective devices, and sometimes as weapons.
The wand, called an onusa, is a traditional Shinto ritual implement comprised of folded paper streamers, shide, attached to a wooden wand, often used in purification rituals. Here, the shide are crafted from silver maki-e, with the handle of the natural boxwood.

A one-of-a-kind important and historical aeronautical achievement presentation in the form of a lamp. Engraved on what appears to be a brass mortar shell. Presented by the Japanese government to Arthur Smith in 1916. Arthur Smith was a famous American airplane pilot during the early 20th century.

This lamp was presented by the Japanese government to Arthur Smith in 1916. Aerial exhibitionist Art Smith barnstorming Japan in 1916, 1917. A 10 year old, Honda Mamamatsucho, pedaling a borrowed bicycle over 10 miles to witness the event. Honda would later cite the experience as one of the most impressive things he"d ever seen which cemented his interest in mechanical objects and motorized vehicles that years later led to the creation of the eponymous company bearing his name.
