Hand-carved in oak, circa 1800, these sculptures depict arguably the most important apostles: James, John, Peter, and Paul. All of the figures are distinctly different, although they share some commonalities, such as they are all barefoot and clad in ankle length tunics on a rectangular base with canted corners. The set would make fantastic decorative art for a mantel, shelf, or sofa table.

Reliquaries have been used to store relics since the Middle Ages. In sacred architecture they are often located behind the main altar in the chancel. In addition to classical, often church-like caskets, anthropomorphic, so-called "speaking" reliquaries were also made, which already inform the viewer about their contents through their own design. Mostly they were made of precious metals and decorated with rich sculptural ornaments or precious stones. One of the most famous examples of reliquaries is the Epiphany shrine of Nicholas of Verdun from the late 12th or early 13th century in Cologne Cathedral.
The reliquary offered here has an architectural structure with a rectangular ground plan. The three-sided glazed box with a dormer roof rests on a plinth.

A remarkable pair of scarce large Italian Baroque period carved and painted wood church altar reliquary busts.
Born in Italy in the 18th century / possibly late 17th century, figural form, each hand carved from a single log, modeled as opposing figures, parcel gilt polychrome decorated, hollowed central cavity with original glazed glass relic viewing panel, rising on integral marbleized scroll foot base.

Very good original unrestored antique condition with beautifully aged patina. Wear consistent with age and use, including scattered nicks, chips, and chippy paint losses. One glazed panel with losses to sides. Overall in great shape, strong, sturdy, stable, and structurally sound. Presents splendidly
