ART DECO STYLE
Art Deco furniture is characterized by its celebration of modern life. More than its emphasis on natural wood grains and focus on traditional craftsmanship, vintage Art Deco dining chairs, tables, desks, cabinets and other furniture — which typically refers to pieces produced during the 1920s and 1930s — is an ode to the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties.”

VINTAGE ART DECO FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS
Few design styles are as universally recognized and appreciated as Art Deco. The term alone conjures visions of the Roaring Twenties, Machine Age metropolises, vast ocean liners, sleek typography and Prohibition-era hedonism. The iconic movement made an indelible mark on all fields of design throughout the 1920s and ’30s, celebrating society’s growing industrialization with refined elegance and stunning craftsmanship.
Widely known designers associated with the Art Deco style include Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, Maurice Dufrêne, Paul Follot and Jules Leleu.
The term Art Deco derives from the name of a large decorative arts exhibition held in Paris in 1925. “Art Deco design” is often used broadly, to describe the work of creators in associated or ancillary styles. This is particularly true of American Art Deco, which is also called Streamline Moderne or Machine Age design. (Streamline Moderne, sometimes known as Art Moderne, was a phenomenon largely of the 1930s, post–Art Nouveau.)
Art Deco textile designers employed dazzling floral motifs and vivid colors, and while Art Deco furniture makers respected the dark woods and modern metals with which they worked, they frequently incorporated decorative embellishments such as exotic animal hides as well as veneers in their seating, case pieces, living room sets and bedroom furniture.
From mother-of-pearl inlaid vitrines to chrome aviator chairs, bold and inventive works in the Art Deco style include chaise longues (also known as chaise lounges) and curved armchairs. Today, the style is still favored by interior designers looking to infuse a home with an air of luxury and sophistication.

The Surefire petrol lighter made by Napier.
This a very rare antique pocket petrol lighter created in Meriden United States by The Napier Company during the art deco period, back in the 1928. This is the Surefire pocket lighter model, which was masterfully designed with an unusual asymmetric shape. It was crafted in solid .925/.999 sterling silver and the sides are embellished with engine turned linear geometric patterns. This model itself is rare and just a few specimens are known in sterling silver or yellow gold. The lighter feature an unusual lift-arm, since the spring for the lift-arm is integrated in the arm. It was patented in 1929 in Canada by Emil Schuelke and Arthur Ross. The lighter is in excellent and near mint collectable condition.

This large advertising store display 'Nipper' dog was made by the Old King Cole Company of Ohio, and dates to approximately 1920 and done in a period Art Deco style. The sculpture is done entirely of a molded paper mache which has been hand painted with a white ground, and black accents with some gold finish on the collar. This RCA advertising store display has been restored at some time, as evidenced by the re-painting of the entire sculpture. There is some overall wear as presented in the photos and consistent with age and use,. This figural advertising 'Nipper' dog is clearly signed with a red paper label for the 'Old King Cole Company' inside the hind quarter with the crown logo. These store display Nipper dogs were done for several years for RCA, and the first ones were done in paper mache, and later done in fiberglass and the last renditions done in a molded plastic. Over the decades we have sold a number of unique and very well crafted crucifixes, but never one in the Art Decò style with this combination of materials and techniques. The overall design and size is what stands out first, but the details and the materials are what make this antique work of religious art extraordinary. The relatively large base of this unique crucifix is a work of religious art in its own right. It is almost as if the cross is growing from this beautiful base and the cross itself too comes with a number of superbly inlays details. For your consideration is this excellent condition Art Deco ladies combination compact dating to 1928. This is a classic Art Deco Richard Hudnut Le Debut Cloisonné Powder, Rouge and Mirror Compact and is an absolute delight in every aspect and genuinely has appears never to have been used.
This compact features a black enamel lid with cream dotted accents; the back of the compact has a spider web machine-tooled finish to accent the octagonal shape of the compact. The case opens to a rouge compartment with a mirror in the lid that is behind a gold toned Art Deco decorated cover. The loose powder compartment is in the lower section of the compact; and it has a hinged and latched recessed door to hold a puff. This feature was a later addition to the initial solid powder product release of 1924 and has the patent date stamped on the underside of the hinged door reflecting an issue date of 1928. The original rouge is in untouched condition and still shows the embossed name Le Debut while the loose powder well is empty. Inside it is hallmarked "Le Debut", "Richard Hudnut" on the Art Deco mirror frame...
