Antique 1830 William IV Flamed Hardwood Metamorphic Library Armchair Steps
By Gillows of Lancaster London
Located in West Sussex, Pulborough
We are delighted to offer for sale this large and collectable lightly restored William IV circa 1830 Flamed Mahogany, metamorphic armchair which converts into Library steps attributed to Gillows of Lancaster and London. This is a wonderful piece of English history, I have never seen another with such elegant turned front legs, usually they are plainer and straight timber. The seat pad has been upholstered with a grey linen, the steps and raw flamed mahogany and look amazing. This chair is an important and extremely expensive looking thing that commands attention in any setting. You can see the same model made by Gillows currently viewed in the Victorian & Albert Museum, below is an extra from their listing. The period 1800-1825 was a great one for ‘patent’ or ‘metamorphic’ furniture This chair, which transforms into a short set of steps for use with bookshelves, is close to a design for a ‘Library Chair’ published in Rudolph Ackermann’s Repository of the Arts in July 1811, which was made by the London firm of Morgan and Saunders, of Catherine Street, Strand. They were well known for their ingenious furniture, including reading chairs with writing surfaces attached and a great variety of travelling beds...

Fine Pair of George III Mahogany Wine Cisterns Attributed to Gillows
By Gillows of Lancaster London
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other. Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers. Thomas Sheraton explained the functions of dining room pedestals in his 'Drawing Book' of 1793: 'IN spacious dining rooms the sideboards are often made without drawers of any sort, having simply a rail, a little ornament...

A late victorian inlaid four fold drafts screen, attributed to Hicks of Dublin
By Hicks of Dublin
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
A very fine late Victorian four fold mahogany draught screen, attributed to Hicks of Dublin, each tall rectangular leaf divided into three panels below a flowerhead border, all inlaid with stained and exotic woods on a satinwood ground, the central panels showing four classical muses, the plain lower panels with satinwood stringing on a harewood ground. English, circa 1895. Footnote: James Hicks was born into a family of Dublin chair-makers and the moved to London to train in workshops on the Tottenham Court Road, London. On returning to Dublin in 1894, he opened a business in Lower Pembroke Street, which rapidly became one of the city’s leading cabinet-making firms and won the royal warrants of King Edward VII and Princess Victoria, the Crown Princess of Sweden.
