Chinese Rugs
Carpet:
The craft of the hand-knotted carpet in China, and the surrounding areas including Mongolia and Tibet, extends into the early centuries of the first millennium, C.E., but we really have a firm grasp only beginning in the later 16th century with large, very coarsely woven carpets, often depicting dragons, created for the Imperial Forbidden City palaces. Chinese carpets have always been commercial and there are no tribal groups responsible for any of the carpet weaving strains.
When the Ming Dynasty fell in 1644, with no Imperial patrons, production moved to the city of Ningxia in north central China where several workshops turned out more finely woven pieces for the Mandarins of the administrative Ch’ing bureaucracy and well-to-do merchants. Ningxia was the major Chinese carpet center up through most of the 19th century, with first allover and then medallion designs on cotton foundations in medium weaves. Palettes were initially limited to yellows, dark blue and cream, but later widened to include reds, browns and even green. These antiques were the first Chinese carpets to be exported to the West and they fitted in well with the craze for Chinese blue-and-white porcelain in the second half of the 19th century. Ningxia also wove shaped and rectangular small rugs for saddle underlays, chair (“throne”) seats and shaped backs, pillar carpets...

19th-Century Tibetan Copper and Brass Ritual Vessel with Applied Ornamentation
Located in Middleburg, VA
A richly detailed 19th-century Tibetan ritual vessel, hand-forged from copper and embellished with applied repousse and engraved brass medallions, geometric plaques, and symbolic mounts. Raised on three splayed feet, this bulbous, high-necked vessel features a domed body adorned with a dense array of ritual and decorative appliques, including stylized floral medallions, abstract symbols, and keyhole-like forms that reference tantric iconography.
The vessel's expressive form is punctuated by three protruding spouts and retains its original arched swing handle with pierced brass finials. Meticulously decorated in traditional metalworking techniques, the surface patina reveals a rich, warm interplay between the copper ground and the golden brass overlay. An aesthetic that speaks to both spiritual function and ornamental sophistication.
Likely used in ceremonial or domestic rituals, this vessel stands as a worthy testament to Tibetan artisanship and Buddhist ritual culture. A compelling piece for collectors of Himalayan antiques...

Tibetan Travelling Buddha Shrine
Located in Houston, TX
A large antique Tibetan Buddha shrine or prayer box (also known as Gau) which encases a painted terracotta Buddha figure, all wrapped in a hand embroidered quilted silk brocade. This was used as traveling shrine and carried on one's person when away from home.
Beginning with the “om” written on the left hand side of this traveling shrine, an itinerant Tibetan monk once traced his fingers clockwise over the embossed characters. As he did this, he recited "om ma ni padh mey hum," the universal Tibetan Buddhist prayer for the well-being of all sentient beings. Known as a Gau, this portable shrine...
