Pair of Upholstered Hepplewhite Shield-Back Armchairs w Provenance, circa 1870s
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This exquisite pair of circa 1870s Hepplewhite style 'Shield-Back' armchairs are exquisite. We believe the wood to be crafted from solid Mahogany with intricate detailed carved details.
The upholstered back and arms provide additional comfort from the traditional open back style of standard Hepplewhite chairs. Acquired from English Antiques specialist Dillingham & Company in 1998, a copy of the receipt is attached in the photo gallery.
These 19th Century antique shield back arm chairs would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandanavian Modern or Danish Modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a Contemporary or Post-Modern room. Also consider mixing it up in a Traditional, Transitional, Classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as side chairs, dining, cafe or breakfast table chairs...

The bronze casting is very likely by the Barbedienne Foundry in Paris, as the quality is outstanding, the clock is stamped "BD" for Achille Brocot (1817-1878) and Jean-Baptiste Delettrez (1816-1887), they were two of the most important French clock makers of the mid to late 19th century, please see some biography below.

Delettrez and Achille Brocot, son of the respected clockmaker Louis-Gabriel Brocot, established the clockmaking company "Brocot et Delettrez" in Paris on 20 October 1851, with premises at 62 Rue Charlot Paris. Jean-Baptiste Delettrez worked alongside Achille Brocot for several years and their clock movements are considered to be the most effective made during the late 19th century. Their specialty was a range of clocks based on the innovations of Brocot père and his other son Antoine, but generally of Achille's greatly advanced original design, some having a unique single-arm double-wheel escapement, some having a temperature-compensated pendulum, some having two dials, one of which showed the time and the other which showed a calendar and often other information such as phases of the moon, times of sunrise & sunset in Paris, etc. The firm was awarded a 1st class prize at the Paris World Exposition of 1857 for a commercial clock...

"Galata Morente" Sculpture in Bronze, sign: F. Barbedienne Fonduer
Located in Ciudad Autónoma Buenos Aires, C
F. Barbedienne fonduer
Ferdinand Barbedienne (6 August 1810 – 21 March 1892) was a French metalworker and manufacturer, who was well known as a bronze founder. The son of a small farmer from Calvados, he started his career as a dealer in wallpaper in Paris. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniatures of antique statues from museums all over Europe, thus democratising art and making it more accessible to households.[2] From 1843 they extended their scope by reproducing the work of living artists and also diversified by making enamelled household objects. With the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian war in 1870 the firm briefly had to switch to cannon founding owing to the shortage of metals but resumed business afterwards. Following Barbedienne's death in 1892, he was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery and the firm was carried on by his nephew Gustave Leblanc until 1952. Among the principal artists reproduced by the firm were Antoine Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin.

19th Century French Henri II Neoclassical Walnut Confiturier, Cabinet
Located in Dallas, TX
19th century French Henri II neoclassical walnut confiturier, cabinet is a stellar example of the petite buffet with one door affectionately called the confiturier because of its original design being intended to store confit jars in the kitchen. At some point it became obvious that a very useful miniature buffet like this would be ideal for other rooms, and the genre blossomed. This example, rendered from sumptuous French walnut, features neoclassical architecture including turned columns carved with fletching on the face fitted with Doric capitals on each cornerpost, flanking the stylized pyramidal heraldic crest on display in full relief at the center of the cabinet door. Fletching also appears on the drawer facade above, with the entire affair graced with fine molded detail.

1871 Botanical Prints of Paeonia and Butomus from Tunbridge Wells Flora
Located in Langweer, NL
1871 Botanical Prints of Paeonia and Butomus from Tunbridge Wells Flora
Offered here is a striking pair of original 19th-century botanical prints from The Flowering Plants of Tunbridge Wells and Neighbourhood by Richard Deakin, published in 1871 by Stidolph & Bellamy and Groombridge & Sons, London. These finely detailed plates depict Paeonia corallina (Coral Peony) and Butomus umbellatus (Flowering Rush), two elegant flowering species native to parts of Europe and found in the Tunbridge Wells region of England.
Rendered with scientific precision and colored by hand, these prints reflect the Victorian era’s passion for botany, natural classification, and the visual arts. Each flower is represented in its full structural form, with careful attention to botanical accuracy, showing stems, leaves, blossoms, and reproductive parts where applicable.
The *Paeonia corallina* features deep crimson petals and vibrant green foliage, while the *Butomus umbellatus* is notable for its light pink clustered blooms atop tall, sinuous stems—its root and bulb details meticulously illustrated alongside. These prints exemplify the dual nature of botanical works of the 19th century: simultaneously scientific documents and refined decorative art.
These plates come from one of the more specialized and regionally focused British botanical publications of the period, making them relatively rare in the market. Their historic link to the Tunbridge Wells flora gives them additional geographic and academic interest.
Condition Report:
Good condition overall. Hand-coloring remains vivid and precise. The paper shows only minor, even toning, appropriate for its age. No significant foxing or tears. Species names are present and clearly legible.
Framing Suggestions:
For the best visual impact and preservation, these prints should be framed in matching frames with archival mats and UV-protective glass. A neutral mount (ivory or pale grey) will complement the organic colors while enhancing their Victorian charm. Ideal for hallways, libraries, studies, or conservatories, especially in botanical or period-themed interiors.
