Style: Arts and Crafts
The Arts and Crats movement emerged in the last decades from twentieth century, like a reaction againts the first industrial style that was developed in England. The one called Victorian Style. It is said that those who came to visit the Universal Fair in 1851, arrived to the Crystal Palace from London, and also amazed by the technical advances, were surprised by the bad taste of all that was massive manufacture. So the idea of industrial progress began to mingle with the intuition that a reaction was needed to return the objects of daily life a certain aesthetic dimension, to accompany thenatural functions for which they were manufactured. This reaction was named Art and Crafts, because it pretend to raise social dignity and aesthetics of design and applied arts of all, integrating them into a harmonious and beautiful architectural environment. From the action of Art & Crafts point of view, it experienced a major boost in 1861, when William Morris founded the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner Company, commonly known as the Morris Company. This table is solid! Really really solid, the legs are each one piece of hardened mahogany, carved in a spiral formation with a lions head to the top. The table top is rich and warm, its bevelled to the edges and scalloped in the style of the arts and crafts era
Each leg has a castor and you find a manual wind handle to extend it, the table is absolutely massive fully extended and can seat 14 people with two at either end, naturally if you are opting for a traditional setting then 12
We have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, there are age and use related patina marks here and there, some color variations in the extension leaves and so on, nothing you wouldn’t expect from a 140+ year old dining table...

A crystal ewer blown and carved with facets in silver mounts. The crystal is engraved with flower baskets or baskets of flowers. The neck of the ewer is finely chiseled with floral motifs and grape vines. The beak is closed by a lid whose grip is adorned with a floral pattern in relief. The interior is vermeil. The ewer has an handle decorated with foliage. The base is decorated with a stylized laurel frieze.

We are delighted to offer for sale this extremely rare very large Howard & Son’s 1881 stamped burr & burl walnut chest of drawers with military history
These are pretty much the finest quality chest of drawers I have ever laid my hands on, they are substantial in weight, the cuts of walnut have a deep rich grain and simply glow in the right light, they are the most exquisite quality.
The inside top right drawer is stamped Howard & Son’s Berners street, there is also remnants of a paper label which has the serial number on of 8696 4332 and then “Easy Chair & Sofa Factory, Howard & Son’s Upholsterers 2526 & 27 Berners Street London Patent dining table” What a great piece of history. The real Piece De Resistance! Is the back of the drawers, they have the original name tag of the owner who commissioned them, one Sir C Pigott, its dated Sept 12 1881, the full history of the good chap is as follows
"Captain Pigott, was born 13 January 1859, son of Sir Charles Robert Pigott, 3rd Baronet, and Mary Louisa (who died in 1873), daughter of Captain C Hallowell Carew, RN, of Beddington Park, Surrey.
He joined the 60th King's Royal Rifles; served in the Zulu War...

American pottery still bank in the shape of a pig, used for saving coins (usually pennies) to encourage children the importance of thrift. Pottery still banks are somewhat scarce since the typical way to remove coins was to smash the bank open, albeit, with this particular example, perhaps a knife was used for coin removal (note the wear to the coin slot---see images) or perhaps the additional wear is also from many coins having been deposited.
The bank is in good all original condition , from an unknown potter (unmarked) circa 1880's, and probably a variant of #633 "Two Toned Pig" in Andy Moore's "The Penny Bank Book" written in 1984 when collecting pottery banks...
