MODERN STYLE

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw sweeping social change and major scientific advances — both of which contributed to a new aesthetic: modernism. Rejecting the rigidity of Victorian artistic conventions, modernists sought a new means of expression. References to the natural world and ornate classical embellishments gave way to the sleek simplicity of the Machine Age. Architect Philip Johnson characterized the hallmarks of modernism as “machine-like simplicity, smoothness or surface [and] avoidance of ornament.”

Early practitioners of modernist design include the De Stijl (“The Style”) group, founded in the Netherlands in 1917, and the Bauhaus School, founded two years later in Germany.

Followers of both groups produced sleek, spare designs — many of which became icons of daily life in the 20th century. The modernists rejected both natural and historical references and relied primarily on industrial materials such as metal, glass, plywood, and, later, plastics. While Bauhaus principals Marcel Breuer and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe created furniture from mass-produced, chrome-plated steel, American visionaries like Charles and Ray Eames worked in materials as novel as molded plywood and fiberglass. Today, Breuer’s Wassily chair, Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona chaircrafted with his romantic partner, designer Lilly Reich — and the Eames lounge chair are emblems of progressive design and vintage originals are prized cornerstones of collections.

It’s difficult to overstate the influence that modernism continues to wield over designers and architects — and equally difficult to overstate how revolutionary it was when it first appeared a century ago. But because modernist furniture designs are so simple, they can blend in seamlessly with just about any type of décor. Don’t overlook them.

Light Blue with Navy Post Modern Hand-Knotted Wool Rug in Japanese Design
Located in New York, NY
The UnTitled collection was designed by Jaime Derringer: artist, blogger, and founder of Design Milk. Jaime’s intuitive and fluid brushstrokes are reminiscent of Japanese Shodo calligraphy. The collection is free of spacial limitations, reaching beyond conceptual expectations of space and style. The designs are imagined to spill beyond the border or “coloring lines” of the rugs. Woven Concepts’ use of a symmetrical weave to innovate texture was likewise the outcome of an experimental product development process. Much like Zen calligraphy...

Year of the Snake, Liesel Plambeck Collection by Mehraban

This rug holds personal importance for designer, Liesel Plambeck, dedicated to her mother and her Taiwanese heritage, the mythology and imagery of a place brought to life in stories. The serpent is an auspicious symbol, and Liesel’s serpent is particularly charming. At times emerging from grassy cashmere and at other times arrayed in silk on a wool field. When placed, the skill of the artist is evident as the form of the serpent emerges beneath furnishings, connecting the various elements of a room. Rug Kilim x El Gato Gomez Mid-Century Modern Style Runner Rug in Green
Located in Long Island City, NY
Hand-knotted in wool, this 3x8 mid-century modern runner rug designed in collaboration with El Gato, draws on atomic age sensibilities of the mid-20th century. On the Design: Connoisseurs may admire this mid-century modern runner rug in pista green tones underscore a geometric pattern in black and blue, with the funky, retro look of circuitry or futuristic machinery that’s so beloved in this aspect of mid-century modern aesthetic. The colorway and pattern enjoy a natural luster—as unique as the gracious scale, refined curvature, and overall modernization of this mid-20th-century aesthetic. Especially appealing to maximalist interiors, gallery spaces, wide hallways, entryways, and a wide array of modern interiors welcoming a most sophisticated, yet playful aura in art rugs. About the Artist: Operating out of California, the works of Crystal “El Gato” Gomez were as arresting and enigmatic as the name she took in founding her studio, exemplifying what we mean when we refer to our collaborators as unmistakable in style. Arguably the boldest and funkiest of illustrators, painters, and digital artists we’ve represented in the collection, Gomez’s feline signature and atomic age style have been seen on some of the wildest works of pictorial illustration, canvas art, and various fashion lines in the field, catching Josh’s eye in a way few other artists have. There’s a range to El Gato’s work that cannot be understated in the discussion of a style that’s never been seen in our industry before — especially in her pictorials where some works enjoy lively, gotham-like sensibility and others depict other-worldly settings capturing the eye like no other. In the effort to do justice to a movement born of creative personalities, Josh was drawn to El Gato’s work and remains confident to see her “retro futurism” received like no other mid-century modern rugs have in the market before following Rug Kilim’s recent unveiling of our collaboration. While her work has been seen in premier clothing lines, galleries, and other celebrated mediums, this collaboration represents the first representation of her work in bespoke rugs...
