Vintage American Hand Hooked Rug in Block Pattern
Located in Barrington, IL
Vintage American hand hooked area rug in a block pattern circa the early 20th century. The very unique and beautiful design in this vintage folk art hooked rug consists of a 4 x 6 block pattern each containing a different design. The design in this hand hooked rug is unique since half the blocks are in a geometric pattern and the other half of floral pattern The design is set on a tan color background. The colors in each block are vibrant and make them stand out. Beautiful piece of Americana folk art to be used as a table top display or a wall art. The hooked rugs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries are made with recycled old material, often used clothing that had been cut into narrow stripes. The foundation of hooked rugs is generally burlap material which the maker uses the stenciling technique to transfer the pattern into the surface. Once the design has been transferred to burlap, it would then be filled with the recycled material stripes and more recently yarn using the hooking technique. The use of special design and the brilliant colors makes this truly an artistic piece wonderful to be used as a wall art or displayed on a table. Antique Hooked Rugs are a combination of Folk Art Creativity and Simplicity. Vintage American Navajo Rug in Chinle Pattern in Cornmeal, Black, Ivory, Gray
Located in Barrington, IL
This vintage Navajo rug features a beautifully executed Chinle Revival pattern, a regional design style that originated in the 1920s in Chinle, Arizona, near the sacred Canyon de Chelly. Handwoven from native hand-spun wool, this rug exemplifies the elegance and cultural depth of Southwestern textile traditions. The design follows a classic banded Chinle layout, with alternating horizontal stripes in earth-toned hues of cornmeal yellow, soft cream, warm brown, black, gray, and ivory. The repeating geometric motifs are rich with symbolic meaning, reflecting the weaver’s deep connection to the land, heritage, and spirituality. Executed with a flat weave construction, this piece is crafted from wool on a typical cotton foundation, showcasing both strength and subtle refinement. The use of natural organic dyes, sourced from local plants and minerals, lends the rug a muted, harmonious color palette that feels at once grounded and timeless. This rug is a celebration of Navajo weaving heritage, offering both aesthetic beauty and cultural significance. Its balanced design and natural palette make it highly versatile—equally suited to refined rustic interiors or modern minimalist spaces. Vintage Native American Navajo Storm Pattern Area Rug in Gray, Ivory, Red, Black
Located in Barrington, IL
An exceptional example of early 20th-century Native American textile art, this finely woven Navajo rug—circa 1920–1930—features the iconic Storm Pattern, a design rich with spiritual and cultural symbolism. Originating from the American Southwest, this piece reflects the high artistry of one of the most respected Navajo weaving families, celebrated for their technical mastery and innovative color work. Woven in wool with a likely cotton foundation, this flat-weave rug presents a refined and balanced palette of soft gray, deep black, ivory, and bold red. The Storm Warrior motif is rendered with remarkable clarity and symmetry, imbuing the rug with a strong visual rhythm and narrative depth. Natural, plant- and mineral-based dyes lend authenticity and subtle tonal variation, in keeping with traditional Navajo practices that emphasize harmony with the surrounding landscape. The geometric designs—more than mere decoration—carry profound cultural and spiritual meanings, often relating to protection, life paths, and the interconnectedness of nature.
