Mid-Century Modern Turkish Rugs

MID-CENTURY MODERN STYLE

Organically shaped, clean-lined and elegantly simple are three terms that well describe vintage mid-century modern furniture. The style, which emerged primarily in the years following World War II, is characterized by pieces that were conceived and made in an energetic, optimistic spirit by creators who believed that good design was an essential part of good living.

VINTAGE MID-CENTURY MODERN FURNITURE ON 1STDIBS

The mid-century modern era saw leagues of postwar American architects and designers animated by new ideas and new technology. The lean, functionalist International-style architecture of Le Corbusier and Bauhaus eminences Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius had been promoted in the United States during the 1930s by Philip Johnson and others. New building techniques, such as “post-and-beam” construction, allowed the International-style schemes to be realized on a small scale in open-plan houses with long walls of glass.

Materials developed for wartime use became available for domestic goods and were incorporated into mid-century modern furniture designs. Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen, who had experimented extensively with molded plywood, eagerly embraced fiberglass for pieces such as the La Chaise and the Womb chair, respectively.

Architect, writer and designer George Nelson created with his team shades for the Bubble lamp using a new translucent polymer skin and, as design director at Herman Miller, recruited the Eameses, Alexander Girard and others for projects at the legendary Michigan furniture manufacturer

Harry Bertoia and Isamu Noguchi devised chairs and tables built of wire mesh and wire struts. Materials were repurposed too: The Danish-born designer Jens Risom created a line of chairs using surplus parachute straps for webbed seats and backrests.

The Risom lounge chair was among the first pieces of furniture commissioned and produced by celebrated manufacturer Knoll, a chief influencer in the rise of modern design in the United States, thanks to the work of Florence Knoll, the pioneering architect and designer who made the firm a leader in its field. The seating that Knoll created for office spaces — as well as pieces designed by Florence initially for commercial clients — soon became desirable for the home.

As the demand for casual, uncluttered furnishings grew, more mid-century furniture designers caught the spirit.

Classically oriented creators such as Edward Wormley, house designer for Dunbar Inc., offered such pieces as the sinuous Listen to Me chaise; the British expatriate T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings switched gears, creating items such as the tiered, biomorphic Mesa table. There were Young Turks such as Paul McCobb, who designed holistic groups of sleek, blond wood furniture, and Milo Baughman, who espoused a West Coast aesthetic in minimalist teak dining tables and lushly upholstered chairs and sofas with angular steel frames.

Generations turn over, and mid-century modern remains arguably the most popular style going. As the collection of vintage mid-century modern chairs, dressers, coffee tables and other furniture for the living room, dining room, bedroom and elsewhere on 1stDibs demonstrates, this period saw one of the most delightful and dramatic flowerings of creativity in design history.

Handmade Carpet Pure Silk Rug, Elegant Turkish Herekeh Oriental Rugs
Located in Wembley, GB
The handmade carpet manufacturing of these masterpieces' luxury rugs began in late the 19th century. This oriental rug was woven in Asian Anatolia, Turkey in the historic city of Hereke. In the mid-19th century, Sultan Abdul Majid proclaimed Hereke to be the royal weaving village. The silk rugs woven there were considered the finest in the world. All examples used select Borsa silk which is the finest quality carpet silk. The Sultan required that all of the silk rugs woven in Hereke had to be signed with the name Hereke. These carpets were regularly woven for the aristocracy in Europe, Asia, and The Middle East. The design of this rug is unique because it is an interpretation of the famous 17th century Mughal carpet from India. The Mughal carpet was exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum and was illustrated in the book called Flowers Under Foot...

The Anatolian Amulet: A Vintage Turkish Oushak Runner of Modern Nobility
Located in Dallas, TX
50038 Vintage Turkish Oushak Rug, 02'06 X 11'11. Steeped in heritage yet radiating contemporary grace, this hand-knotted wool vintage Turkish Oushak runner is a triumph of restrained opulence. Its composition—anchored by a sequence of commanding hexagonal medallions—reveals a harmony between architectural precision and spiritual symbolism. Each signature medallion functions as a woven talisman, invoking both balance and protection, while its stepped edges suggest the ascending form of ancient ziggurats. This is a Turkish masterpiece designed not simply to adorn, but to elevate—to transform its surroundings into a passage of quiet grandeur and timeless sophistication. The artistry is deeply rooted in Anatolia’s illustrious weaving legacy, where every motif carries a story and every symbol a purpose. Within the medallions, stylized amulets and scorpion motifs stand as ancient guardians against misfortune, their angular geometry expressing both strength and grace. The delicate bird forms woven between them serve as emblems of love and prosperity, softening the design’s rigor with lyrical balance. The interplay between geometry and spirit reflects the dual nature of Oushak artistry—regal yet human, refined yet elemental. The precious rug’s texture adds another dimension to its allure. The hand-spun wool possesses a luminous sheen, responding to light with an almost silken subtlety. Variations in tonality and weave create a painterly effect, a sophisticated abrashed surface that whispers of age, authenticity, and tactility. Its surface exudes the calm richness of timeworn luxury—the kind of beauty that feels inherited rather than acquired. Each inch bears the trace of craftsmanship passed through generations, a legacy of skill refined to near perfection. To own such an exquisite work of art is to possess more than a rug—it is to inherit an artifact of cultural resonance and aesthetic mastery. This exceptional Oushak runner speaks to those who appreciate the nuance of rarity and the poetry of design that transcends fashion. Whether gracing the corridor of a modern penthouse or the entryway of a heritage estate, it embodies an aura of cultivated prestige—an object of enduring beauty for the collector who values history woven into the fabric of modern life. Rendered in variegated shades of camel, butterscotch, caramel, tan, sand, ecru, taupe, coffee, espresso, brown, peanut, and mocha with other neutral striations.  Small repair on one corner...
