Part of a large collection of ornate Victorian wicker that was collected over the years by a Senator's wife. This rolled woven arm loveseat has wicker curlicues in the open areas under the side arm rests. Across the back are alternating lattice weaving and woven portions. The woven skirt comes from the top of the back leg to a mid-point on the front leg and returns to a shorter curved skirt in the center front. It is a delightful example of a late Victorian love seat.

Nineteenth-century loveseats are charming seating furniture that materialized during a time when prudence was promoted as an important part of social norms. Antique loveseats, also known as tête-à-têtes, were essentially small, two-seat sofas that allowed for people to engage in close conversation but offered space between sitters in the interest of preserving modesty.
Loveseats were initially designed to provide room for womens’ elaborate dresses of the era. These seats can be traced back to the late 1600s, but the now commonly used term for romantic furniture of this kind first appeared in the 19th century. While they were initially little more than wooden benches, the design of loveseats evolved over time. Loveseats of the 19th century were padded and tufted for comfort, as was typical for furniture of the period.
