1960s Eames 3474 Time Life Executive Lobby Desk Chair Vitra ES104 Black Leather
Located in London, GB
An extremely rare and museum-worthy 1960s model of the Eames Time-Life Desk Chair in lovely vintage condition. Widely considered the most iconic office chair design of the 20th Century, this especially rare version of an outstanding armchair will provide superb quality and comfort and will add a quintessential Mid-Century, 1960s-cool, ‘Mad Men’ aesthetic to any interior. Eames Time-Life Desk Chairs are in high demand for their quality, durability and scarcity, especially in working condition and upholstered in leather, and even more so if they’re one of the oldest, first-generation models from the 1960s, such as this one. What makes this particular chair even more of a special piece is that this model hardly ever comes to market and a recent exhaustive search has found only one other – in a design museum. A real gem, a design collector’s delight and one of the rarest early versions of one of the most sought-after chairs, this armchair was made 1960-1968 (or 1961-1970 depending on which maker’s website you read) and was produced in Switzerland by Vitra, who have held the European licence for manufacturing Eames furniture since 1957. The only other example we’ve found of this extremely rare European version of this much sought-after design icon is on the Vitra Design Museum’s website itself. This superb chair goes by several names and can be called: the Eames Time Life Desk Chair, the Eames Executive Office Chair, the Eames 3474 (manufactured 1960-1968) or the later ES104 (manufactured 1968-1985). To somewhat further confuse the name, this super chair is similar to, but distinct from its precursor, the Time-Life Lobby Lounge Chair (which was made as a lounge chair specifically for the lobby of the Time Life Building in New York), and so this chair can also sometimes be called an Eames Lobby Chair, or an Eames Lobby Desk Chair. We like to use its correct moniker, the Eames Time Life Lobby Desk Chair or Eames 3474, which was released in 1961 as an adaptation of the slightly shorter, wider, squarer and more angle-backed Eames Time Life Lobby Lounge Chair released in 1960. Expertly made, this extremely comfortable and reassuringly heavy armchair features plush, padded and buttoned black leather cushions to the seat, back and arms, over an aluminium frame set on the 1960s four-star aluminium base. Distinguishing it from the Herman Miller (American licensee) produced 1960s version are the Vitra bolt-handle tilting mechanism and the Vitra black plastic ball feet casters with aluminium hoods, making this particular model an extremely rare (almost never seen outside of the Vitra Design Museum catalogue) version of this already very rare and much sought-after armchair. All in all this is an incredibly rare, museum-worthy 1960s design icon, which won’t fail to add outstanding quality, comfort and quintessential Mid Century style and sophistication to any setting. AUTHENTICITY The labels on these early chairs appear to have been stuck to the underside only and as such, few labels still remain and such is the case with this chair, which no longer has an Eames or Vitra label. However, we’re 100% confident that this is an original 1960s Eames chair...

Wieland Unimold Wedge Form Lounge Chair
Located in Hanover, MA
Fantastic sculptural 1970's wedge-form lounge chair on triangular walnut plinth base by Wieland Furniture Company of Bay City, Michigan constructed with their patented Unimold molded plywood internal frame. Frequently misattributed to Adrian Pearsall. This sits a bit low for my abs but is very comfortable for lounging. Original upholstery reminiscent of Gaetano Pesce's UP chair. Very clean overall. Wieland Furniture Co., a furniture design and manufacturing business led by four brothers, was once located in the Great Lakes Bay Region and made significant contributions to furniture technology despite its modest size. In the 1960s, Wieland Furniture employed about 60 workers in its 45,000 square foot plant in Bay City, Michigan and had developed an innovative process that reduced costs and significantly reduced waste. The patented process was called Unimold, a method of making upholstered furniture with a molded plywood back and seat shell. This particular construction method eliminated 60-75% of the parts used when Wieland first began making upholstered frames. The Unimold form-the heart of chairs and sofas that were manufactured at Wieland-was a 96 in.-long plywood shell molded to shape in a high frequency press. From this shell, Wieland trimmed different lengths to provide frames for sofas, sectionals, or chairs. The proof of Wieland’s success was evidenced in the amount of sales since the Unimold first was introduced. Five years after introduction, sales skyrocketed over the million dollar mark with inquires for Unimold licensing for companies as far apart as Wales, Australia and Puerto Rico. Daryle Wieland once explained that, “only two separate components are necessary to make Unimold furniture- the basic shell and ’S’ shaped molded plywood piece, which becomes the front and back rail when cut in two. Plywood molding in long lengths is difficult, because it is hard to get the high frequency waves out to the ends of the mold equally.” The construction method is unbelievably strong because of the strength of curved plywood. In fact, Wieland could build 100 inch sofas...

Charles Eames Eero Saarinen “Organic Chair” Model No. A3501, 1950, USA
Located in Biebergemund, Hessen
Very rare and collectible Eames & Saarinen "Organic Chair", winner of Organic Design competition at MoMa. First manufacture from the early 1950s, laminated and moulded wooden seat shell, foam upholstery which was covered with textile fabric designed by Marli Ehrman. A special patented joint holds the wood legs firmly to the shell. Originals of the organic from the 1950s are collector's items and exhibited in museums. They are also traded on art auctions, where one was sold in 1999 for $ 120.000 in bed condition. (take a look at the picture) Designed for the “Organic Design” competition by Museum of Modern Art in New York on 1 October 1940. The competition was initiated by Elliot Noyes, the first curator of this newly installed department. The goal was to motivate architects and companies to develop and market modern furniture for a modern lifestyle. Their participation in the MoMa competition was the first collaboration between Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames, and they won first prize. Besides the chair, their submission comprised a high-back chair, an armchair, a sofa, and office furniture, which they presented in the form of several drawings. No true-to-scale prototypes were produced for the competition. Production of the “Organic Chair” only started in 1950 and was terminated after a short while. The original design had envisaged aluminium legs. This idea was discarded because the material was scarce during the war, and wood was used instead. New technologies were also involved in the production of the seat shell, which was composed of strips of veneer and was to ensure utmost stability and comfort while using as little material as possible and being extremely lightweight. Later on, Eames based...
