Louis XVI Buffets

LOUIS XVI STYLE

Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.

Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.

Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.

The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

Important meuble d appui Stamped Zwiener Jansen Successor
Located in BARSAC, FR
Large Louis XVI style sideboard with central projection presenting a rich marquetry decoration, with trellis enclosing floral-inspired motifs on the front, diamond motifs on the sides. Different types of exotic precious wood are used such as sycamore, mahogany and amaranth. The Fleur de Pêcher marble top has a very artistic veining with a very rich palette of colors. Finally, the rich ornamentation of gilded bronze and very finely chiseled completes the whole, giving an elegant opulence to this unique and rare piece. Opening with three doors on the front. Work from the end of the 19th century. The bronzes are marked on the back ZJ, attesting to the prestigious origin of this piece of furniture. Some details on this subject: The "ZJ" mark has long been controversial among experts on 19th century Parisian furniture, some attributing these pieces of furniture to the Zwiener house, others claiming that they are pieces of furniture from the Jansen house, the latter having bought the Parisian workshops of the famous Zwiener brothers in 1895. We can cite for example Christopher Payne, the leading expert on the subject who writes in his book "Paris la quintessence du meuble au XIXème siècle" in the chapter on "Jansen Jean-Henri (1854-1929)" on page 396: "The initials "ZJ" affixed to the back of the bronzes have long been attributed to Jansen, cited as "Zwiener Jansen". However, we believe that these initials also refer to the furniture made in Berlin by Julius Zwierner and not necessarily to those of Jansen. To complicate things, Jansen bought the "ZJ" master models. The latter being mainly of the type and style of those originally modelled by Léon Messagé, who was an independent sculptor until the end of 1890." Along similar lines, Christopher Payne writes in the chapter on "Zwiener Emmanuel...

19th Century Louis XVI Marble Top Walnut Display Buffet by Kint of Gand
Located in Dallas, TX
19th Century Louis XVI marble top walnut display buffet by Kint of Gand is a stunning piece that will immediately command admiration from all who enter the room in which it is displayed! Hand-crafted by Edouard Kint, a fine furniture maker in the historic city of Ghent (called Gand in French), a city that originally started as a settlement at the confluence of the Rivers Scheldt and Leie and in the Late Middle Ages became one of the largest and richest cities of northern Europe, with some 50,000 people in 1300. It prospered primarily because of the rich, fertile soils surrounding the area. Evidence of habitation during the Stone Age has been found, and by the late 19th century it was a thriving European center with historical significance, producing such masterworks as this splendid buffet. Although it is almost six feet in width and over two feet in depth, its rounded sides soften the impact of its footprint on your floor plan, while simultaneously providing copious display, storage, and serving space in abundance! Crafted from hand-select walnut, it has been lavishly carved with intertwined foliates across the main facade in a step-front configuration, with rounded cornerposts carved with rosettes, egg form and laurel garlands atop reeded and fluted motifs providing a framework for the lush, artistic neoclassical carvings on the parquet-paneled doors. Urns in full relief are depicted amongst flowing ribbon, floral garlands and intertwined vines. Bronze key guards add a nice accent. On each side, recessed behind the aforementioned rounded cornerposts, are the display cabinets in a full quarter-round form, with fluting across the drawer that, with the bronze bale pull, pivots out on a single rear hinge. The rounded cabinet door below is fitted with a single curved pane of beveled glass, with quarter round shelving...
