18th Century Italian Louis XV Solid Walnut Pair of Antique Corner Cupboards
Located in Casale Monferrato, IT
These exquisite Italian corner cabinets from the Louis XV period, dating back to the mid-18th century, bring a unique historical charm to your living space. Crafted from solid walnut, these corner cabinets are designed to enhance the aesthetics of any space while offering functionality. Each sideboard is constructed from two detachable sections: a base with elegantly slender, curved legs, and an upper section with a door. This modular design makes them easy to move and adapt to different environments.
Distinctive features such as the elegant curved legs are typical of the Louis XV period. Adding to their appeal, the upper section boasts a rounded shape. Despite their small size, each corner cabinet efficiently integrates storage solutions: the upper compartment includes two shelves, while the lower section offers a small drawer.
Finding a pair of corner cabinets from this era in such commendable condition is exceptionally rare. Although slight signs of wear attest to their rich history, they remain in good general condition and have been restored with a conservative approach. It is essential to measure the corner spaces based on the dimensions of the sideboards: each corner side measures 40 cm (approximately 15.748 inches).
Ideal for a country home, these corner sideboards...

Antique early 18th century Dutch blacked oak two door table cabinet for TV
Located in Casteren, NL
This Dutch table cabinet, also known as a cross-legged cabinet, is made of oak and has a deep, almost black finish, which suggests a traditional treatment such as ebonized stain or dark varnish. The cabinet stands on a distinctive base with four turned and faceted legs, connected by an elegantly curved stretcher and ending in ball feet. This type of base is characteristic of cross-legged cabinets. The upper section features two doors with molded panels and a cornice with a clean yet subtle profile. The gilded hardware on the drawers and doors adds a stately and luxurious appearance. The cabinet is removable, making transport and installation significantly easier. Additionally, its design makes it particularly suitable for housing a television. Thanks to the special hinges and their strategic placement, the doors can be fully opened without obstructing the view. Inside, there is space for a television with a maximum width of 48.2 inches and a height of 27 inches. The interior is finished in the same deep, dark color as the exterior, ensuring a uniform and elegant appearance. This cabinet was crafted in the Dutch Baroque style and is likely from the period between 1680 and 1720. The Dutch Baroque style is characterized by a restrained yet elegant design, where functionality and durability go hand in hand with refined details. This piece exhibits typical Baroque features such as the heavily molded cornice, the solid presence of the upper section, the use of dark wood tones, and the expressive shape of the base. This type of cabinet was made during the late Dutch Golden Age, a time when prosperity still had a significant influence on furniture design. During this period, cross-legged cabinets were highly sought after by the affluent bourgeoisie and institutions such as city halls and council offices, where they were used for securely storing important documents, money chests, and administrative records. Dutch furniture makers were among the most influential in Europe at the time, exporting their craftsmanship to countries like England and Germany. The use of dark oak furniture...

Midcentury Trumeau Handpainted in Italy Wood Venetian Art Technique by Cupioli
By Cupioli made in Italy
Located in Rimini, IT
This Trumeau has been handmade using the technique of Venetian art.
In the 18th century in Venice the fashion of lacquering spread. Using small prints, cut out and then glued on the wood, then handpainted and lacquered at the end. The finishing was in fact in shellac which, passed in several very thin layers, gave brightness and uniformity to the decoration. This type of finishing was placed both on the outside of the Venetian furniture of the eighteenth century, and on the inside of the drawers and doors . The wooden structure of this piece of furniture is hidden by a flowering of pleasant designs.
The craquelé finishing tipical of ancient painting...

A Rare Mid 18th Century Black Japanned Lacquer Cabinet on Stand
Located in London, GB
England, circa 1760.
A fine mid-eighteenth century Japanned lacquer cabinet, with two doors revealing an interior fitted with eleven drawers with ring handles, all decorated with naturalistic scenes including fishermen and rural life. Retaining the original mid-eighteenth century stand, also with comparable chinoiserie decoration and X form stretcher with central pierced quatrefoil.
Height 161.00 centimetres.
Width 98.00 centimetres.
Depth 51.00 centimetres.
The art of 18th-century Japanning was a European practise that sought to imitate Japanese lacquerware and became a method of emulating the aesthetics of East Asia within the home. The term originates from the late 17th century as the opening of trade routes in the East triggered an interest in Chinese and Japanese fashions in Britain, France, Italy and the Netherlands.
It’s popularity reflected this era of imperial ambition when the West was fascinated by the exoticism of the East and saw the rise of an orientalist attitude. During this time, Europe’s demand for lacquerware began to grow and The East India Company's importation of lacquered objects and screens created a desire for larger, more practical items with similar decorative finishes.
To replicate the appearance of oriental lacquerwork, European cabinet-makers turned to John Stalker and George Parker's 1688 ‘A Treatise of Japaning and Varnishing: Being a Compleat Discovery of Those Arts’. This book contained formulas for creating and applying lacquers as well as various chinoiserie illustrations for readers to copy and modify, having made a concerted effort to reference designs on Chinese porcelain and textiles.
European japanning differed from traditional East Asian lacquer work which used sap from the Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree (also known as the Chinese lacquer tree...
