Gilbert Rohde Paldao Cabinet for Herman Miller
Located in Hanover, MA
Gilbert Rohde designed this chest for Herman Miller as part of his 1941 Paldao Line of streamline modernist and modular furniture in exotic veneer. This is model no. 4103, two-door cabinet with distinctively incised large round pulls, interior fitted with two adjustable shelves behind the left door and five pull-out drawers behind the right door, fronts finished in black enamel. The case top and sides are Paldao wood; the doors are in highly figured burl Acacia. The finish is called "Beaver" which is natural color, no stain, satin varnish. The back is numbered "4130." All of Rohde's designs for Herman Miller are marked with a 4-digit number; the first two numbers indicate the year, and the second two numbers indicate the individual piece. Newly refinished and ready to place in your home. The Herman Miller Furniture Company was devoted to manufacturing period reproduction furniture until Pioneer industrial designer Gilbert Rohde walked into their Grand Rapids showroom in 1930. A devout modernist, Rohde convinced D.J. De Pree to focus on modern furniture throughout the 1930s, and to produce exclusively modern furniture by the time Rohde died in 1944. Work by the pioneering American industrial and furniture designer, Gilbert Rohde, is notable for its thoroughly modern, informal, and multifunctional qualities. Rohde’s ability to create appealing modernist furnishings for middle-class homes, while also devising merchandising strategies to sell these goods, places him within a unique framework in American design history. Born and raised in New York, Rohde was the son of a cabinetmaker. He attended New York City public schools and his post-high school education included courses at the Art Students League and the Grand Central School of Art. Rohde’s visit to Europe in the spring and summer of 1927 (with later trips in 1931 and 1937) to see the Bauhaus in Dessau and the French modernist design that debuted in the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes in Paris, profoundly inspired his concept of design and the role it should play in daily life. The French Art Deco and German rationalist styles he saw in Europe influenced the furniture he designed from the late 1920s into the 1940s, pieces he created to suit a rapidly changing American lifestyle. In addition to his work for Herman Miller Inc., Rohde also designed for several other furniture firms, including Thonet, Troy Sunshade, and Heywood-Wakefield. What set Rohde apart from his contemporaries was his all-encompassing understanding of the furniture industry, from design and production to marketing and showroom display.[1] During his time with Herman Miller Inc. (1932-1944), Rohde set the standard for collaborative efforts between designers and furniture firms, with George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames later...

Lieutenant Samuel Pratt s Walnut Highboy, circa 1740 Boston, MA
Located in Milford, NH
An exceptional two part highboy in burled walnut veneer, the upper case featuring a molded cornice with hidden drawer surmounting a center shell carved deep drawer flanked by two fitted small drawers on either side, and four graduated long drawers, all with crossbanded herringbone veneered borders and period, possibly original brasses, over a lower case with a single long drawer over three deep drawers, the center of which repeating the shell carving seen above, unusual for a highboy from this period. The carved skirt features two nicely turned drops, all supported by four slender cabriole legs terminating with pad feet. Massachusetts in origin, probably Boston, dating to the 1730’s, in very good overall condition, with minor veneer shrinkage cracks, minor restorations, minor losses, and light wear commensurate with age and use. Provenance: Purchased from Shreve, Crump & Low in NY, with a copy of a 1947 letter acknowledging the Boston area origin and commission of this piece by the Pratt Family and reads as follows: “The known history of ownership of the walnut highboy dates from the 18th century and Lt. Samuel Pratt and his wife, Elizabeth Pratt, who lived in Chelsea in the section known at that time as Prattville. The Pratt family, for whom the area was named, had been in this country since the 17th century. Mr. Mather, while President of Harvard College, stayed at the Pratt home in Chelsea in 1688 while on the way to see King James II of England for the purpose of bringing back into power the theocratic democracy of the Church of England. During the Revolution, part of Washington’s forces stayed in Prattville, and Washington stayed at the Pratt home. It is known that he ate some of his meals there. Once the British broke into the Pratt house and looted some things, including a scarce bowl which was hidden in the wall of the fireplace. The son of Lt. Samuel Pratt was also a lieutenant in the American forces and named Samuel. During the Revolution, he was in charge of the stock of arms and ammunition, which each town kept on hand for any emergency; and he carried hay to Boston, where is was used to reduce the noise of the Boston Tea Party...

Important 19th Century Charles Cressant Influenced Commode
Located in Brighton, Sussex
An important French mid-19th century gilt-bronze mounted kingwood, satiné and parquetry bombé commode after the model by Charles Cressent attributed to Maison Millet, Paris the serpentine Brocatelle Violette d'Espagne marble top above two long drawers centred by a flaming urn, flanked to each side by a child holding oak branches and headed by courting doves, the front angles with a bust of a boy and a girl each holding a dove, each bombé side with intertwined oak branches, on oak tree trunk supports and foliate-cast feet. The original model for the present commode dates from the 1730s and is the work of Charles Cressent (maître in 1720; d. 1768). Entering the collection of the Dukes of Hamilton after the French revolution, the commode was sold at the celebrated Hamilton Palace sale (lot 1806) in 1882. It was purchased by Ferdinand Rothschild and is now in the collection at Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire. This impressive Régence style commode is reminiscent of the work of François Linke, however none of the mounts appear to be stamped or recorded in his oeuvre. Maison Millet was an active client of François Linke and it is believed that this commode with its distinctive high quality mounts and construction are characteristic of the production of this celebrated Parisian cabinet maker. Maison Millet was established by Théodore Millet in 1853, and continued until 1902 from premises at 11, Rue Jacques-Coeur, Paris before relocating to 23, Boulevard Beaumarchais. Maison Millet was a highly regarded furniture company that was described as producing 'meuble et bronze d'art, genre ancien et moderne'. The firm won several awards in the series of exhibitions in London and Paris, such as the gold Medal in the 1889 Paris Exposition Universelle. In 1902 Maison Millet was authorised by the director of the Palais de Versailles to replicate Marie-Antoinette's celebrated Grand Cabinet à bijoux. Literature: Sir Anthony Blunt...
