The central section finely decorated door panel displaying an allegorical 'Vernis Martin' scene, within a gilt bronze banded frame. With finely cast acanthus and figurative gilt bronze mounts.
Stamped ‘NZ’ for Zwiener on the back of the escutcheons and reverse of the bronze mask to the base.
Born in Herdon, Germany, in 1849, Joseph Emmanuel Zwiener followed the tradition of some of the best ébnistes of the 19th century. He moved to Paris establishing a workshop at 12, rue de la Roquette, between 1880 and 1895. He produced a wide array of the very finest furniture, modelling in his own interpretations of the 18th century Louis XV Rococo style, veneered with the highest and finest quality marquetry and 'Vernis Martin' panels. Exhibiting at the Exposition Universelle, Paris, in 1889, Zwiener was awarded a Gold Medal for what the jury reported as 'dè ses dèbuts à une Exposition Universelle, [il] s'est mi au premier rang par la richesse, la hardinesse, et le fini de ses meubles incrustés de bronze et fort habilment marquetés.'
Zwiener was closely associated with François Linke and the two houses produced work which, at first glance, is remarkably similar and with occasionally identical mounts. The similarities are made more likely by the fact that the brilliant sculptor, Léon Messagé, worked initially for Zwiener and subsequently, upon Zwiener's departure for Berlin to work on furniture commissioned by Freidrich Wilhelm II, he was employed in the workshop of François Linke. It appears that Zwiener, unlike Linke, did not sign all his work, although some stamped pieces with his name and/or his "Z" initial are documented. Stunning Arts and Crafts cupboard by one of the greatest.
We are certain that this wonderful handcrafted, stained oak cabinet was designed by Leonard Francis Wyburd (1865-1958). We are certain, because of several style elements that are typical for his designs for Liberty & Co in the late 19th century. We have no pictures in books or other evidence, but the pieces from his hand that can be found on the internet reveal style elements that are very similar and they were used by no one else. The design of this incredibly artistic piece shows both the influences of Medieval and Rural Britain. It were these early and amazing pieces of furniture from the Liberty Studio (headed by Wyburd) that made people across the continent speak of the 'Stile Liberty'. Designers like Wyburd and pieces of furniture like this amazing cabinet, influenced and shaped the entire development of the Jugendstil and Art Nouveau in Europe. That too makes this rare piece important for collectors and possibly for museums around the world.
This cupboard is a work of art and it is an absolute joy to look at. It is all made of solid and stained oak and apart from the stunning and impressive overal design with the overhanging top with supporting beams, there are some key style elements that make this cabinet really stand out. First of all, there is the ever so true saying which is embossed in copper in beautiful Arts and Crafts letters which reads 'WELCOME IS THE BEST CHEER'. Secondly, there are the rare leather panels in the doors which come with (faded) images in slight reliëf. The one on the left is of a man in a hat and tights and he is playing a mandolin. Bio:
Born in Indiana, Jim Rose lived in Europe until he returned to the United States to attend college. After one year at Bard College, Jim transferred to the School of the Art Institute in Chicago (SAIC) where he graduated in 1988 with a BFA. His skillful interpretation of the Shaker design is a result of intense research and field study of Shaker furniture, architecture, culture and history. After over two decades of dedicated work, he has mastered the minimalism of the Shaker technique and created his own unique visual vernacular. The quilts of Gee's Bend have become a monumental influence taking this artist's work to new levels of unique interpretation and artistry. His selection of aged steel results in a patina directly related to that of aged wood while his colored strips beautifully mimic worn cloth. Each piece of furniture is masterfully made and intended for daily use. Jim Rose’s steel furniture is featured every year at SOFA Chicago for the past 25 years.

The special tree is a tree in which two lovers write the promise of an everlasting love.
The special tree sideboard is a redesign of the original cabinet. A singular version of this sideboard is presented in ebony Macassar, showing the geometric volumes with the luxurious natural dark hue in high gloss varnish. The base and the tree trunks are in polished stainless steel. In the center of the base, the most special tree preserves the subtle carved jewelry work with the name of the creation as well as small wavy brass ‘branches’ lifting the interior glass shelf.
