The cabinet is illustrated and discussed in Christopher Payne’s “British Furniture 1820 to 1920” published in 2023. Payne singles out the rarity of the olivewood timber used as well as the necessity for hand cutting the large marquetry panel.

Town and Emanuel
Recorded in the 'Dictionary of English Furniture Makers 1660-1840', published by the Furniture History Society, as being situated at 103 New Bond Street between 1830 and 1840, and apart from being manufacturers of furniture, also dealt in 'curiosities and antiques'. The late renowned connoisseur Christopher Gilbert records in his 'Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture' London 1997, also published by the Furniture History Society, a writing table in the Transitional manner with similar plaques. This grand and distinctive piece of furniture from Northern Brittany is known as a “buffet malouin” and was created in the late 17th century. These types of cabinets were created for important homes in the historic port city of Saint-Malo. The design, with large octagonal molded panels, double colonettes, and finely cut brass fittings, is unique to other French furniture of the period. The design was directly influenced by the Dutch mariner carpenters living in Saint-Malo at the time (the Dutch beeldenkast cabinet shows similarities)
The large four-door cabinet was carved in oak, as was most of the other “malouin” furniture pieces. It is an imposing and impressive piece, standing over 7 feet tall and nearly 7 feet wide. The front of the piece has twisted, double colonettes, multi-profiled cushion-shaped octagonal panels, and finely cut brass key hole escutcheons, drawer pulls, and lozenge plates. There are 3 drawers, 2 of which are full sized, with a smaller drawer in the center. 3 large bun feet along the front hold up the entire piece, while 2 block feet support the rear.
Each door has its own functioning key and lock, with a yet another key for the center drawer. Door and drawer panels are solid and impressive old pieces of oak, which still open and close with ease, indicating the quality of construction and great care that this piece has received over the centuries.
The “meuble malouin” in the form of a large 4 door buffet is not often easily found. Research shows photos of several models in various states that have come to surface, but they were not nearly pervasive as French case...

This extremely rare, Antique French Cupboard, is from the Château de Loyat in Brittany, which I believe dates back to the 1500, was in a condition, that Antique dealers can only dream of. The French Cupboard or Cabinet, is exactly what you would expect, a 300-year-old antique French Cabinet to look like, if no one ever touched the finish, let alone restore the Antique Cupboard. Our opinion is, that this Antique French Cupboard or Cabinet, could have been made in the late 1600s or early 1700s and if I did not know that this Cupboard was made from French White Oak, one would have thought it was constructed of iron, based on its weight. Our centuries old French Cupboard, was constructed without the use of any nails or glue, for the entire Antique Cabinet was assembled using wooden pegs. Our Old Plank restoration department, has just completed a 240-hour conservation procedure, wherein lieu of just replacing the old worn wood oak boards, we chose to harden them and only used small fillets of antique French Oak for repair. Yes, this became a labor of love, but for us, to find an antique French Cabinet, in this virgin untouched state, is quite rare nowadays, so, the choice was made to conserve, rather than restore, which required triple the labor. A stunning large antique Tuscan two-door cabinet (buffet - credenza) with Renaissance style polychromed decoration. circa 1850
Hand-crafted in the Provincial Tuscany region of central Italy in the mid-19th century, old solid wood construction, most likely pine, in the original paint finish, Neoclassical taste, having a rectangular top over conforming two door cupboard, opening to spacious interior fitted with one shelf, rising on tapering squared legs with ring-and-spike feet.
The doors and sides feature inset panels with beautiful medieval Florence hand painted whimsical flags capped by grotesque scrolling foliate embellishments.
