A very rare antique George III English Mahogany secretary bookcase, with a fitted collector's or doctor's cabinet to the base, circa 1790.
The bookcase in two sections; the top section with a flared cornice with a frieze of dentil molding below, the bookcase with twin glazed doors with intersecting curvilenear astragals, the doors enclosing a pair of adjustable shelves.
The base having a deep drawer with a locking fall front desk, fitted with a tooled & gilded leather writing surface, and a fitted interior with pigeonholes with removable doors and drawers each fitted with an oval gilded name label. Below are a pair of locking doors enclosing an elaborately fitted interior; comprising one long shallow tray shaped drawer above a host of 13 drawers of various sizes, all with the original brass hardware and corresponding oval gilded name tag, to the left side is a file space.

The cabinet’s centralized glass door is flanked by thick spiraling Solomonic columns surmounting a lower drawer. To the rear of the cabinet, the motif repeats in an eloquent display of perspectival treatment. The overall work is supported by a tiered base, elegantly conceived, and the cabinet is topped by a handsome pediment flanked by square plinths crested by gilt metal finials and an openwork frieze.
The cabinet’s tempered and moderate form suggests an origin probably during the first decade or quarter of the 18th century. Although utilitarian in concept, the reserved and sublime expressiveness of this cabinet is managed with a quality and care respective of the influence of Florentine ebony cabinetry work conceived in the Galleria dei lavori or Grand Ducal Workshops of the 18th century Medici dynasty. A very fine antique French Provincial burl chestnut & fruitwood armoire bonnetiere, circa 1750.
The armoire is made from the most beautiful burl chestnut and various fruitwoods, to the top is a removable stepped crown, below is a raised burl panel inlaid with an ebony and fruitwood star shaped device. The cabinet has single paneled door with incredible burl chestnut panels, plenty of storage to the interior, can receive shelves or a hanging rail, the door having one long iron hinge & the original large reticulated iron lock plate with original key and lock. The door opens and closes with ease and the lock and key function perfectly. The base is fitted with a single drawer, original lock with wonderful iron handles & reticulated backplates, the lock plate elegantly decorated with two iron 'trees', the shirt having a lozenge shaped inlay with a stylized compass design, the bonnetiere is raised on tuned feet.

The art of 18th-century Japanning was a European practise that sought to imitate Japanese lacquerware and became a method of emulating the aesthetics of East Asia within the home. The term originates from the late 17th century as the opening of trade routes in the East triggered an interest in Chinese and Japanese fashions in Britain, France, Italy and the Netherlands.
It’s popularity reflected this era of imperial ambition when the West was fascinated by the exoticism of the East and saw the rise of an orientalist attitude. During this time, Europe’s demand for lacquerware began to grow and The East India Company's importation of lacquered objects and screens created a desire for larger, more practical items with similar decorative finishes.
To replicate the appearance of oriental lacquerwork, European cabinet-makers turned to John Stalker and George Parker's 1688 ‘A Treatise of Japaning and Varnishing: Being a Compleat Discovery of Those Arts’. This book contained formulas for creating and applying lacquers as well as various chinoiserie illustrations for readers to copy and modify, having made a concerted effort to reference designs on Chinese porcelain and textiles.

A rare and most impressive authentic Italian Baroque period Christian church sacristy cabinet (vestment chest / credence cupboard) circa 1725
18th century, Italy, richly detailed handcrafted workmanship, having a tall narrow wide rectangular case, with a hinged lid top opening to a spacious shallow storage compartment, above a pair of large cupboard doors decorated in early fleurs-de-lis and foliate scrolls inlays, retaining the original hand forged iron hardware with working lock and key, enclosing a sturdy adjustable-height shelf, and the ability to add additional shelves, all rising on carved walnut bracket feet.

A scarce museum quality example in very good original antique condition, especially considering its age. Attractive appearance, retaining the original warm mellow patina, authentic antique character and rustic charm throughout!
Strong, sturdy, stable, structurally sound. Wear commensurate with age, use, handling and display, including scattered nicks, chips, abrasions, accretions, very slightly askew door when closed, naturally distressed patina over the whole, all typical character that can only be acquired over a very long period of time!
