Louis XVI Case Pieces and Storage Cabinets
LOUIS XVI STYLE
Reflecting the final era of royal opulence before the upheaval of the French Revolution, antique Louis XVI furniture features more angular shapes than the Rococo curves of the Louis XV style, harkening back to the imposing grandeur of Louis XIV.
Dating between 1750 and 1800, an era that overlapped with the last king of France whose reign was cut short by the guillotine, Louis XVI furniture, known as the goût grec, is emblematic of the neoclassical revision that French furniture underwent during the second half of the 18th century.
Authentic Louis XVI furniture characteristics include clean lines and carved details such as scrolls and acanthus flourishes that were inspired by ancient Greece and Rome. This was informed by a burgeoning interest in antiquity in the 18th century, owing to new archaeological excavations at sites including Pompeii and Herculaneum. It largely eclipsed the more East Asian–influenced ornamentation of Louis XV for something more geometric and symmetrical.
The Louis XVI style was defined by what was being created for the palatial rooms at Versailles and Fontainebleau, particularly for the queen, with cabinetmaker Jean-Henri Riesener being a favorite of Marie-Antoinette’s for his luxurious pieces accented with gilded bronze and marquetry. Furniture maker Jean-Baptiste-Claude Sené was also a major designer of the period, with his pieces for the royal residences adorned with giltwood and neoclassical touches like tapered columns for chair legs and laurel leaf carvings. Cabinetmaker Adam Weisweiler occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.

A very fine 19th century Louis XVI style gilt bronze and gilt metal mounted rosewood vitrine cabinet with malachite tops, by Pierre E. Guerin (1843-1911), in the manner of François Linke (1855-1946). The slender single-glazed front door tri-level vitrine 'Meuble d'Appui' cabinet fitted with three sectional malachite veneer tops (later) and glazed beveled-glass panels on the sides, surmounted with gilt-bronze and gilt-metal ornamental mounts with playful Putti amongst vines and leaves, ribbons, musical instruments, flowers, torches, masks, wreaths and acanthus, all raised on six fluted and tapered legs with gilt-bronze ring fittings and sabots. The apron mounts with a polychromed Verde-green background. The mounts marked 'P.E. Guerin 527 and other numerals. The interior with two glass shelves and a recent green velvet paneling. Pair of antique Louis XVI style plum pudding & gilt bronze open bookcase cabinets with marble tops. By Maison L'Escalier De Cristal Paris. Maker's stamp to each. Circa 1890-1910.
The bookcases have beautifully shaped Breche d'Alep marble tops above a single drawer. Each with an open adjustable shelf, and cupboard below. Raised on shaped legs, with gilt bronze handles, edgings, corner mounts and apron. Shelves are 27cm deep 19/25cm cupboard height is 55cm
The pair are in excellent condition for their age, showing some light surface marks and vey light knocks in places. They have been wax polished. There is a slight blister to the plum pudding veneer on one door, you should be able to make this out in photograph number 13. The marble tops have some light nicks to the corners, as shown.
The shelves are fully adjustable to the open bookcase and the cupboard. The drawers have dovetail construction and are made of oak. Each drawer has turned drawer stops to ensure they do not fall out. One of the turned pegs is missing to one drawer on one side. The cupboard doors have a newly made key for the locks. The locks are inner stamped, 'Duvivier 77, St. Antoine/Paris.'
